I have had a couple of request lately for Parental Controls for home networks. I haven't really investigated this topic yet. what do you recommend?
Is there something that sits in front of the router or between the router and modem? I typically use access points and turn off the wireless features or use a router that doesn't have wireless features.
Is there something that is easy for the parent to update, block, unblock themselves?

Are they looking to completely lock it down or some sort of filter to keep their kids from seeing the pr0n?
There are several software solutions available. I would have to look them up to refresh myself. I had one guy who just built a new home. He did not want wifi at all for this reason. He finally caved, likely due to his wife, and let us put in a UniFi. But then he wanted to keep his kids from using it.
I told him not to give them the password. Done. :) YMMV. There are "censored" solutions out there that should filter effectively enough to keep the kids on the right side of the web. :)

Netnanny would be a software solution that would do this. Also if you look at the pricey routers such as Sonic Wall. They usually have the option to filter violence and other adult entertainment type sites.

You could also use a dns server that has that sort of service. Route all your WAN requests thru it and it's done. I do that for my Guest network. Introducing FamilyShield Parental Controls, the Easiest Way to Keep Kids Safe Online - See more at: [Link: opendns.com]

I haven't looked to see if those DNS services can deny WAN access during certain (presumably night) hours.
For that, a good router can drop all packets coming from certain SSID's VLAN.
