Thats the trade off. You want kitchen on AND surround sound? It can only be all channel/direct. Is what it is. Most of the time when they want speakers on in more than one room, its for music. You want to watch a movie in dolby? then sit you ass down in the surround sound area and watch the damn movie lol.

The kids issue is simple too: put them on ebay. problem solved. :)
