I have a client with a house full of televisions, most of which are being controlled by Time Warner's standard issue URC-sourced semi-programmable remote [UR5U-8780L-TWC for Ernie]. I swapped an old Sharp television with a SONY [XBR-43X830C] and began reprogramming the System On/Off macro with the SONY code to allow semi-convenient power control of the TV and Tuning Adapter...Then the trouble began.

There appears to be a discrete TV Power ON code now assigned to the "TV" function button and an OFF code assigned to the "PWR" button...One that actuates when the "TV" function button is pressed and the other that actuates when the "PWR" button is pressed. The problem is that this now prevents the "System ON/OFF" macro [which relies on toggles] from working properly since you MUST press the "TV" function button before pressing "PWR" in the step-wise entry of commands. So, the result is that the TV turns on and back off again because it's firing a PWR ON and then a PWR OFF. If I try to only press "TV" when building the macro sequence, the macro will only turn the television on, but not off.

I've seen a similar thing with Yamaha Aux codes...

Anyone know how to remove/dissassociate the discrete power code from the "TV" [or other] function buttons? I didi try a couple of older SONY TV codes, but all behaved similarly.

TIA

Yeah, a lot of remotes that are set up to control many things don't do a great job with some of them.

The DirecTV remote can turn off a Yamaha receiver but can't turn it on. Remotes set to run combo DVD + TVs often don't have volume control, because, hey, it's a DVD player! I've seen so many such remotes where the cursor pad doesn't work on most items that it surprises me when it does. The solution is probably to give up on that remote.

On the other hand, does the remote have a JP connector inside near the batteries? That's a whole other world of programming possibilities, and in a mere 46 hours you might be able to come up with a fix. Or maybe faster.
A good answer is easier with a clear question giving the make and model of everything.

The OP's cable remote is made by URC, where jp1 remotes are made UEI. So they are not very programmable at all. :(

William Watson, I'd check with the manufacturer of the AC unit.
