Ive known this issue forever but I thought I read a post that a TV update would allow it to pass 5.1 out of the optical... Parents got a playbar and I hooked it up for them, updated the TV and nada.

I know I could get an HDMI switch that strips out the signal and connect it directly to the playbar but I rather not....Stupid samdungs.

Nada? Sounds like you did a firmware update on the TV and after that you got no audio from the optical output.

As I remember the problem, it was that the optical output was only 2.0, so the only possible surround was ProLogic. Nobody ever said "nada," so maybe something else is wrong.
A good answer is easier with a clear question giving the make and model of everything.

I don't know that it's Samsung's call - I think it's a legal thing.

Based on our experience only some LG's ( higher end models ), all Sony's and Visio's will provide pass-thru 5.1 from HDMI to optical output . All TV's "should" allow for 5.1 from built-in tuner and smart apps .

And if the TV allows you to turn off the speakers in the menu. Then it might allow 5.1 to pass through to the optical out as well.
