The remote was sitting on a wood shelf for more than a year, at least thirty feet from any food items. The shelf is pine that was stained a dark color. I have probably fifty linear feet of that wood, with that stain, and none of it has ever been sticky in any way since it was stained. In 1970.

The portion of the remote that touched the wood is sticky in a way identical to the parts that were not touching the wood. So it's not the wood, nor its stain.

Thanks for the ideas. I'll bet Bestine does the trick. Now to find less than a gallon of it for sale somewhere....
A good answer is easier with a clear question giving the make and model of everything.

URC remotes have been doing this all the way back to the MX-500 (i.e. a long time ago). The MX-700 was a different color, but it got sticky too :-)

Last year i cleaned two of our sticky MX-500s. They had accumulated a sort of dull thin gummy sticky film on the housing even though they're in a clean smoke-free environment and our hands are always clean. My new-in-box units are still clean.

Anyway i gathered two thin Pep Boys microfiber cloth towels, then i sprayed part of one cloth lightly with Fantastic spray cleaner (not enough to leave liquid on the remote) then i carefully scrubbed the whole casing then on and around all the buttons (using my fingernail on the cloth), moving to clean areas of the cloth as the previous area picked up the gunk. I had to go over it a few times but i took my time, but i got it squeaky clean leaving it smooth and shiny.

Then i sprayed the 2nd cloth lightly with distilled water and went over the whole remote again to remove any leftover soap film then buffed it clean with the dry part of the cloth. These things actually look like new again so it was worth the effort. Wifey thought i bought her a new MX-500 :-)

Stationary and art supply stores often sell pints.

The interior of my 2006 BMW 3 series has/had the same issue. I replaced much of the interior. Replacement parts don't have the same crappy finish.

I would sand and paint, if I couldn't replace.

Yeah, but no MX850 owner will speed up, pull in front of another remote owner, then slow down................
