I touched on it in the 3D thread.

As TV sizes get bigger, the pixel sizes get bigger.
It's somewhat easy to fit smaller pixels and up-convert HD signal into UHD.

After all, you can walk up to a TV at BestBuy or Costco and actually see the pixel size.

People buy 4K TVs because they don't cost that much more, marketing has done a good job on conveying the 'value proposition' and there is a perceived value in future proofing, even if there is no viewable content today. (sort of like 7.1 or 9.2 in AVRs)

PJs, as explained above work on different technology.
Getting chips to deliver 4K content is expensive and since there is not a lot of 4K content, the value of 4K in PJ world is purely marketing based.

Which my wife hates. The PS on my 2nd gen 720p plasma went out, so I replaced it with a new 1080p LCD. Wife still hates it. She says the picture looks fake and almost like a Mexican soap opera. She has seen 4K in stores and wants no part of it.

I will say that 720p plasma had one of the best pictures of any TV I have ever had. So sometimes color depth is not what everyone wants.

you are confusing refresh rate with color depth. Your 1080P LCD is probably set to 120/240 refresh and that is known to cause the soap opera effect. Now color accuracy and black level, they are easily better on the plasma.

Our industry needs buzzwords to move product. "3D".. dead, "600 Hz refresh" ... useless, "Curved TV"... gimmick, "4K"... cool, but no content or streaming options even with decent internet speeds.

My single chip InFocus DLP has been cranking along for years and the color gamut was one of the most accurate out of the box (according to isf) of any projector... ever. Upconverting 1080P to 4K achieves nothing except a blurrier picture.
