You're being optimistic about there being no knobs for anyone to play with, though in making your point you limited that to gain settings, so I suppose you're right. What can be screwed with, though, are master gain, gain after having hit a zone button, the scene buttons, the menu cursor pad (there will be displays for people to look at while they screw this up), program, straight/effect, turning on tone/balance... you're being WAY too optimistic that this won't be messed with.

The reason to use commercial equipment is that all of the adjustments, for instance zone 2 volume versus zone 3 volume, will be obvious and available and not hidden in a menu where a Yamaha specialist will have to be on hand to fix screwups. This may be very successful for you but it is not the way to do things.
A good answer is easier with a clear question giving the make and model of everything.

The key to making the Yamaha receiver installation a success is the fact that it is installed out of site and I am using a custom touchscreen interface.

Input gains can be adjusted so all sources are at the same level, plus I can set the maximum volume of every zone. I actually took advantage of this so that it is impossible for anyone to turn it up to damaging levels.

No need to worry about accidentally changing surround mode - the control system automatically sets it to 5 channel stereo whenever a source is selected. There are commands available to keep settings in the proper mode if I choose to use them.

Volume levels are graphed on the interface and I can create my own scene buttons that involve video, room levels..etc..

One thing I forgot to mention in previous post is I also have the system programmed to turn itself on and off on a daily schedule. If the owner was interested, I could have it automatically change music selection and volume levels at different times of the day.

What commercial equipment combination can do all this for under $2k in amplifiers and 3 zone preamp with two way feedback, tuner, 4k HDMI switching, and iPod connection? I'm sure the other quote with commercial equipment did not offer the features I had in mind and brought to reality.

If I have the chance to do this again with a large budget I hope to use commercial equipment that can do the same thing otherwise I would provide this as an option for someone who wants some bang for their money.
