AT&T has been slow to run fiber in our area. However, we do have a local co-op phone company that has been building fiber service like crazy. Actually, they created a subsidiary so their execs can draw double salaries, they don't have to give rebates on the Internet and tv side, and they can expand into AT&T territories while still keeping competition out of their co-op territory. Any way, here are their prices for fiber service. Warning, swallow before opening so you don't spit all over your screen

I guess I should be happy to have what I have in my area:

But unlike Tucker in the boonies (farm land with low subscription density) or Casey in some remote beach front property, I'm in metro area of suburb city with roughly 85,000-100,000 people adjacent to Albuquerque's 1 million people greater metro area.

My service is similar to yours, I am on the outskirts of the resort community and all I can get is DSL wired to the house. I am also in a town of about 6k people, a trade I can accept.

See if there are any http://www.wispa.org/ around you.
Apparently it's the fastest growing market... at least that's what I've heard in one of their YouTube presentations.

We pay $95 for 5MB down and 768K up. Next step up is 10MB up/down fiber for slightly less than $900. Even in silicon valley internet speeds suck.

I pay $88 a month for 50mb download and land line phone (which I don't ever use).

What chafes my butt is I'm supposed to get 50mbps download, but every time I've ever tested it it is never over 25. Even with my entire network disconnected (except the testing laptop).

They recently raised my rate $15 a month because they raised my download speed from 35 to 50 but I'm actually getting less speed now. I'd call and raise hell but I don't need anything more than 25. And I know it would raise by BP to level III waiting for an hour and eventually talking to some dumb ass on the phone who would tell me to reboot my modem, or it's my equipment, etc. I just wish I could get my old rate and drop my download speed to 35.

I am half tempted to go open up the ped at my property and remove the cable filter in place and steal their cable feed (I have the necessary security tools)...but there is nothing on cable worth watching and I would need one of their cable boxes (my TIVO went tits up a few years ago).

Within the last year Cox has eliminated all the lower tier download speeds and now start at 50mb. I guess this is a consequence of everyone cutting the cable. Their business model is addicted to high monthly rates and they will get their pound of flesh one way or another (instead of tightening their belt and adapting to lesser monthly revenue)

I'm in a strange little neighborhood between a freeway and a...whatever you call a river in the LA area but it's nearly dry all the time... anyway, it's definitely at the end of the line. Verizon's best ADSL speed is up to 1 MB download an 0.3 upload. In a city with a population of 80,000, across the street from Long Beach with 470,000 people, and the switch is in Long Beach.

So, while I hate, in a generic way, all cable companies, I finally got cable for internet only. (There are reasons why I don't use it for TV, too.)

With DSL I could hardly ever get speedtest.net to load! Just now I checked and the speed is 116 down, 12 up. May I say this: ! ! ! ! ! !

On another topic, the entire concept of "up to" deserves to die a swift decisive death. When talking with Verizon, who initially claimed they could deliver "up to" 3 MB, it occurred to me that at any given moment I have "up to" six billion dollars in my pocket. The fact that I only have a tenner is irrelevant: ten bucks fits within "up to six billion."

"Up to" is a totally BS way of describing something. If you've got a female CSR on the line, ask her if she would ever describe her weight as "up to three hundred pounds" and her age as "up to 78 years old." We just don't describe things that way unless we're trying to get away with something!

This also goes for store-wide sales where prices are up to 75% off. If nothing AT ALL is discounted, that fits within the description!
A good answer is easier with a clear question giving the make and model of everything.

Car mechanics has a car they have to work on weekly.

I am paying Cable One $55/month (recently up from $50) for 100Mb/3Mb speeds. I finally got some decent networking gear that allows me to actually use those speeds. :)

My old Airport Extreme was not cutting it. When it finally died, I had to throw in a POS Level One wifi router we had laying around the shop. What a turd that was. I just put in a Luxul router, POE switch, and 1510 WAP. My 2.4Ghz congestion sucks nuts. Too many neighbors with crap all over every channel. Using Speedtest app, I am lucky to get 35-40Mpbs down speeds. I am the only one using 5GHz that I can see. So I get 100+....same as I get using a wired connection. Not bad. :) So far so good.

They keep threatening to bump me up a tier because we use more than our cap allows every month. They have not done it yet. I actually called and tried to upgrade, and they just gave me a credit (virtually a free month), and then back to normal. Not sure who screwed up that one, but I did not ask any questions. :) I have just received my 2nd final notice about going over the cap. Whatever.

Check your modem. (Presuming you are on cable for Internet?)
It may not be a DOCIS3.0 modem.
Had this happen at two clients houses, tech support kept blaming my equipment, they upgraded client service, but never sent new modem.
