One big upside to going back to cable internet is that you can provide a Surfboard modem and any router that you want. It may not save you money, but you can be assured that it will work. That is worth something in my book.

We left Uverse (while it was still AT&T here in CT. It was bought by Frontier and sh1t REALLY went south). The reason I left Uverse was because of internet. We went with a combo of Charter for internet and Dish for TV. We are paying more, but I no longer have all the hoops to jump through that AT&T had me doing to simply try and port forward for viewing cams offsite. I had issues with other systems as well, all with offsite viewing and services. While I pay a little more per month, ALL of that aggravation went out the window the day we switched. It's been smooth sailing since.

Funny, when I at AT&T in CT. I had my own modem, I think I had it from SNET days. Although this was DSL version of U-Verse. Made me mad when they told me U-Verse was available in my area. But it was actually DSL, not their super high speed.

So I don't know how that works. Is it a totally different modem and that modem isn't available for ownership for the super high speed U-Verse?

First, it's not super high speed. It is about half the speed of our regular cable service. At least it was. I have no idea if it has changed. I steer every client away from Uverse, which is easier than ever now that Frontier is running the show.

Dish Network told my client that the cable we ran to her dish wasnt RG6. She called me and let me talk to the guy. He argued that "the cable is too thin to be RG6 and wont work with Dish Network". Cable manufacturers print a bunch of useful information every couple of feet.

What happened is that his spool of RG6 has thicker cable on it. He doesnt know anything about cable so he thinks its based on physical size.

I had a UVERSE box with fiber in my back yard and all they could give me was 18 down while comcast was offering 50 at the same price.

An old co worker who lives in new condo in Norwich was getting 120 down, and 50 up. That was 2 or 3 years ago. To me that is super high speed for that time. Especially since I was offered 6.5 down and 0.5 up, which is still the only thing available on my street from Frontier.

Don't know what to say. I saw the speedtest screenshot and it was on wifi. He rarely went anywhere else except for work and home with his iPod touch.

He was persistent on having AT&T rather than Comcast.

I'll 2nd that as I still have never seen speeds like that with uverse, including their own website.
And definitely not 2 or three years ago.
My guess is your buddy didn't have uverse or was using a neighbors unsecured wifi.

We're Comcast customers and I want to have them increase our speed from 25 to 100.

I do not want their crappy modem/router/telephone device and would like to supply my own, or at least use the Comcast model we've been using so far which is a Ubee DDM3513 -- DOCSIS 3.0. From what I can see online, it supports more than enough speed for what I need.

Is DOCSIS 3.0 the latest spec?

That has a 4 channel bonding for download and 4 channel upload. Technically it's enough for the 150 speeds they are advertising. However, it's right on the edge.

Check out your modem's main page. Typically 192.168.100.1 That is what I gathered from the user manual for your modem. Login and see what each channel is getting. All four channels should be operating. If not, then there's a problem. Maybe the modem is starting to fail, hence only half the speed.

Keep in mind that there are really two different UVERSE'S. One is brand new rolled out all fiber high speed "up to 1Gbps download" and the other is rebadged DSL that could be anything from 2mbps download over copper.

When we moved in August i was forced to agree to taking the phone package if i wanted 100mbps. I would have to stick to 50 if i didn't want phone because it was a packaged deal. They also pushed their combo router modem wifi public hotspot device on me because of the Phone part of the package.

In my area, not even the Comcast installers like the Comcast routers. Usually, you can talk someone into setting the modem/router into bridge mode. With some models the customer can do this and if you are lucky, the hotspot will shut down in bridge mode. In one commercial installation, Comcast installed a modem for the Internet connection and another for the hot spot. We couldn't elect out of the hotspot, but after the installer left, I decided that I was one power outlet short and the hotspot drew the short straw.

By the way 3.1 is the latest spec, but it is not generally available and is being rolled out in test areas.
