Noticed last night that my HD TIVO box has an RS232 port on the rear. The manual says the port is for future expansion, so I'm guessing that haven't written any firmware to use the port. Might be worth a phone call to DirecTV to find out.

I'll assume the last sentence is a joke (i.e. good luck finding anyone there that has a clue).

Hey QQQ,

Isn't that the case with just about every manufacture, OK a few exceptions.

Wow this is pretty sad. I thought someone would have something available. OK I guess its back to IR and boxes with no discrete codes.

other than voom most sat. boxes have discrete's unless you want to do something totally out of the norm.

If you can find a Sony HD-300 it has a serial port, and uses the new style DTV control protocol, plus some extensions for it's specific features. CQC has a driver for this one, so I know that it works as advertised.

But, as indicated, now that DTV took them over, I'm not sure what will happen. If they do have a control protocol, it may be good since they will all be consistently implemented. If they decide not to implement any control scheme, then that will be very bad, since cable boxes are even worse at consistently implementing control.
