Is there way to train users to hold camera horizontally instead of vertically? It is annoying to watch videos, news clips or photos with such a skinny image. Probably not, just like to bitch in my old age.

"Likes" is the currency. Start a Twitter (and other social venues) campaign and message footers stating that you will not "like" any posts including tall skinny photos. Essentially, you are withholding payment.

Roll up a newspaper and swat them on the snout?

You old fellas have to learn to adapt. Things change. Portrait videos are not meant to be landscape.

sorry, Most people have no idea whether they should be shooting portrait or landscape. They just shoot portrait because thats how they normally hold their phone.

not sure why someone hasnt come up with a square camera chip to put in phones that would allow folks to just crop how they want to shoot.

Or better yet. A camera chip that automatically adjust to be landscape all of the time.

Or even a warning message on the screen. "Are you sure you want to record in this mode?" With a little pic of the phone being tilted to landscape. Then once in landscape, the video will be recorded in landscape mode. I've seen a video where it started off in portrait. Heard the person holding the phone, "Oh, let me record in landscape." So he turns it and the video automatically switches to landscape. Not sure if that was done automatically by the phone or if it was done in post-production.

Of course I can't remember the video. ha

Have you ever had anyone bitch about the black letterbox bars on the top and bottom of their TV picture?

That's why.

Its ok, 95% of it is crap you dont want to see anyway.

There is never a need to shoot a video in "portrait" mode. Hence the name PORTRAIT. Its for PORTRAITS, not video. It not made for video and should simply not be able to work until you turn your phone for landscape. Thats the answer, have the manufacturers not allow video until phone is turned to right angle. Ive had this gripe for years.

Make an app for that. lol. Im sure i can be done.

I dont want to letterbox anything. Just crop it to the widescreen resolution or portrait resolution.

THis would simply give us the option of shooting widescreen video while holding the phone in the more comfortable position.

I should patent this I guess.

Drives me crazy. I will OCCASSIONALLY shoot something quick portrait with my phone just cause its easier to hold the phone, but never something of value. For instance, wanted to show someone my gauges working in my car after I fixed them, so shot a quick down and dirty vid to quickly send. So didn't care there.

My wife will shoot everything portrait though. I have $5-6,000 in camera gear and if I hand her the camera to take pictures of the dogs, for instance, she immediately turns the damn thing. I yell at her, "NO, Bad girl" :-D

Or, people could bother to learn how to change the settings. iPhone 6 has one for square photos. I guess that would be too much to ask.

Square photo does not equal landscape.

I once heard a radio host complain about this while watching a video of a brawl in Burger King. He said, "hold your gun vertical and turn your phone sideways"

It's mobile phone video of car accidents, cats and walmart fights. Why do you care?

Were you guys all upset when widescreen came out and you had a 4:3 TV? Sitting around in your crocs steaming about the fact that your TV is clipping valuable left and right content?
