I just dont get it, we do everything by the book, nothing changes and we still battle with it. The Community says use HDbaseT cause it works, but it doesnt. Its crap. Ive used Zektor, Snap,Key Digital, Vanco,Ethereal you name it. All have weird issues and clock stretching is prevalent with it.
I use ICE cable, which is "HDbaseT" Certified. Non EZRJ45 ends, pull it with care blah blah blah... Recently HDbaseT caused me a day of troubleshooting, where I finally got it by using a stupid spliter between all sources and the output of the AVR.
Then on the same job I tried a Vanco Non HDbaseT single Cat 6 extender and it worked after dialing it in. Client calls me today and says the kitchen TV is working fine (vanco extender) but the living room TV has sound but no video...WTF!!! Im running out there to stick a non HDbaseT set in.
All in all on this one job HDMI has caused me over 30 hours of issues.
To be clear im using all Ethereal HDMIs!
But its not just this job, its alot of them recently. So what the HELL gives, is there an manufacturing issue with the HDbaseT chip made in the last few months?
Usually I try to use JAP for P2P but its been a hard sale lately for just a P2P solution.
Im so fed up with HDMI, I do everything by the book yet I still have issues. Why on some jobs it works fine using mostly the same pieces but then some its just a nightmare from the beginning?
$&*#^ HDMI I honestly am getting to the point where I cannot make money anymore because of this shit technology, Im going to have to start putting jobs on T&M basis JUST because of HDMI and that is going to make me not attractive any more. Honestly guys, I just dont even want to deal with it anymore because Extenders and HDMI is taking me away from actually running my business.
Is it honestly time to just use commercial gear in residential? anymore I feel like its not just HDMI extenders but the other pieces in these systems that have just gone down the tubes with quality. I mean were told and trained now to put enterprise networking in homes, is it now time to put commercial gear in residential systems due to the race to the bottom all of these manufactures seem to have anymore?

We've completely moved over to HDMI over IP using JAP. We explain up front that remote located equipment done right is very expensive. Very expensive = more than the TV for starters. The supposed-to-work HDMI gear/system simply does not work.
Anytime I need a Matrix, I use JAP....it just plain works.
Anytime I need an extender I use the Binary with the Binary Splitter. I spec int he splitter and if I need it for clock stretching, then its there.
I never ever ever ever ever use a splitter to split a cable box, BluRay, appleTV or any source for that matter. If you want splitting, then you need JAP.
I never ever ever use the HDMI A and HDMI B out of a receiver. Just asking for problems.
I use Capital HDMI's up to 20 Feet. Anything over that gets a Binary HD-Base T Extender.
Never use EZRJ45's, The only video I put through a punch down is JAP. Never punch down a HD Base T Extender.
I always run my CAT Cables as far away from any electric possible.
I have yet to ever have a single problem with a JAP piece other than a power supply.
I use Sony and Marantz Receivers with Sony and LG displays. I did have several problems with Samsung TV's and Extenders. After losing my ass on 3 of them, we won't do the Samsungs again. If the customer is dead set on the Samsung, it gets local equipment and no extenders.
Something you are learning right now is that things cost what they cost. JAP costs more because it works. It costs $XXX and requires so many hours of labor. You can count on it to do what its supposed to. Client pays the $XXX and they get what they want/need.
Product X costs less but only works half the time. You saved the client money up front but you are costing someone (usually yourself) thousands of dollars troubleshooting it. And the kicker is that the client doesn't care that you tried to save him some money. He doesn't even remember it. The only thing he knows is that your system doesn't work properly.
If JAP always works for you then JAP should be the only product you sell. Don't even offer anything else. Your attitude should be "if the cleint wants the rack in the closet then they need JAP".
As your business grows you have to make decisions like this with many things. Equipment racks for example. Imagine having 5 racks worth of equipment and trying to wire it up in built in cabinets. You need the racks. The client needs the racks. There is no options when it comes to the 5 racks because the system they are getting requires 5 racks.

Rather than repost the whole thing..... First: Thank you for using my cables.
Second: Audio but no Video is very unusual (if this is from the same device), I would have to ask some questions with you on the site.
Third: I do not know if there has been any issues with Valens chips (HDBaseT) of late. I am concerned that while they have published a roadmap to the higher bandwidth needs (4K/60, 4:4:4 and HDR), products have been unavailable for testing.
Fourth: IP (ie: JAP) and Modulation (ie: Our M3B) are a stable way to send multiple sources to multiple displays, however currently none of these options offer to way to move beyond todays standard.
Lastly: The only safe way to send HDMI is over a passive HDMI cable (and there are limits here), we can now get 17 meters of true 18 Gbps with our MHX passive cable and our GA1 Gigabit Accelerator.
BTW: It is not any more fun on this side of the phone.

Not sure "commercial" equipment is much better. We have done plenty of Extron and have had issues.
Whats worse is clients will start thinking you don't know what you are doing because their shit doesn't work. Its really frustrating.
You will have 5,6,10 jobs in a row with no issues. Then the next one you will see a blip when you're in the middle of something else towards the end of the day. The sinking feeling starts to take hold.
Well, the one thing in common all your HDMI problems have is yourself.

Watch that video, go to the Atlona education portal and do the level 100 training. It's product agnostic but it explains exactly how HDMI, HDCP, EDID and all those associated things work.
One this is certain: You will go out of business before HDMI goes away so the advantage you have is Atlona spent a ton of money making that portal and training and it's first rate.
I've basically done all Crestron DM and have zero issues. Every one of our systems just work consistently, it's awesome but expensive.
Yup, this is pretty much the answer. You want HDMI distro, you get DM. Not without issue (DM/Marantz audio fiasco) and I have had 1 bad DM-RMC, but nobody is perfect, they are just the closest to it.
Against my better judgement I did a rehash of an OLD component video based system with 2 8x8 Binary (snap av) matrixes. Amazingly the damn thing has been bomb proof, even feeding one matrix into another.
Did a (not my design) video splitter into 2 HDMI extenders and I had at least 10 service calls on it. Would work for weeks at a time then suddenly blow chunks all over the place. Company I worked for lost their asses on that whole deal. I finally convinced the guy to use component to the kitchen tv (only source is a cable box). Have not heard a peep out of the dude since.
I try to explain to clients that HDMI is evil and was designed by lawyers, hollywood and engineers who have no idea how it works out in the real world. I will say it is great when it works, I just wish it worked more often. It does seem to be annoyingly more common for almost all manufacturers to cram a bunch of features into devices that aren't really needed and frankly, normally don't work. Because you just know you are going to have a client that makes voice control, HDMI ARC audio, his tvs built in webcam or some other obscure feature into his hill worth dying on. Remember PIP? Kind of the same deal.
My most common service call/ nasty phone call. "MY NETFLIX ISN'T WORKING"!!!!! I always tell people with Appletvs to go to the Trailers app and try to play a movie trailer. If it works, it isn't my problem.
I am a trained professional..... Do not attempt this stunt at home.
