I come across this situation all the time.

Theater area with surround sound
Back of theater is open to a bar or pool table area.
Need sound to be in sync so as not to get an echo effect.

How do you guys handle this?

Thanks,

Matt
Thanks,
Matt

When bar zone is active select 5 speaker stereo as surround mode may help. I assume you have an audio zone in pool table area.

Yes audio in second area also. Best way we have found is to use a Pioneer receiver, because they still have speaker B.

Downside
You can't use it with atmos
And the receiver automatically switches to all channel stereo mode when B speakers are turned on. So no surround sound.

I don't want clients changing surround modes, because most can't handle that. Its too confusing for them.
Thanks,
Matt

How are you controlling the system? Make a macro so when they turn on the bar and the theater is on too it sends the 5 ch stereo command to the receiver.

Does the receiver support "scenes"? These usually store all of the particulars of the current mode. In some cases the "scene" can be stored beyond the reach of a casual user, but readily available to a control system.

What kind of receiver? Denon and Marantz have "All Zone Stereo". Syncs everything up. Perhaps others have something similar?

So in other words, there is no longer any way to play surround sound and have a stereo area be sync'd. That sucks.
Thanks,
Matt

Well, there might be, but it's kinda outlandish. Are you able to determine which sound comes out first? While I hear the echo, I can't tell which is first.

You could actually get a separate audio delay line for each of the two channels. It's not likely to be inexpensive and it depends on Zone 2 being ahead of the surround zone... but it's possible.

That trick with the Pioneer and Speaker B requires going into all channel stereo. Otherwise you have no center channel on Speaker B and, for instance, singers won't be there! But doesn't the Pioneer do almost exactly what you want? It even keeps your client from having to mess with surround modes.
A good answer is easier with a clear question giving the make and model of everything.

Someone mentioned in another thread you can use JAP and they have audio adjustments and it worked great. Audio is separate and adjustable. I dont use jap but that was the word.

Why would you want a stereo signal to play surround? Sounds like ass when you do that. Multi channel stereo sounds much better for music.

I don't, I want a movie sound track to play in an area behind the theater where the screen can still be seen.
Thanks,
Matt

A few years ago I used an Audio Control piece to sum surround sound speakers and convert to analog out that could be fed into zone 2.

Was kind of a weird solution, but worked well for my situation and I have 3 setups like this all running for over 3 years without issue.

You can read RC post about it here:

I'm not so sure I see a problem here.

If you're using zone 2 from a SS Rec, then connect the stereo analog audio outputs from the source to the receiver. If your receiver doesn't have audio lipsync for zone 2, then add an external one.

Simple problem to fix if you ask me.
