The way im setting up my house I want to put my computer in the rack and put it in the matrix. I dont do any gaming any more and just use it strictly for work, dtools, emails, browsing etc.

I want to distribute it throughout the house, and my office. Also a computer in my garage.

Is there a way I can have multiple keyboards/mice?

Whats the best rack PC case that wont murder my budget? Just the usual PC components, SSD/HD..Nothing crazy!

Ive used http://www.circotech.com/ for the four rackmount pc's I have at home. Not the greatest quality but does the job. You can buy direct. Cheap really.

I found it best to use an iOS app to control the pc. Eventghost is the one i use I think? Never used a keyboard outside the rack drawer one.

I customer wants me to come by and pick up an IBM server his company is getting rid of. Thought I might be able to use it for a rack mount even if i dont use the part. It was 5 grand at one time. Think they are about $400 on ebay now. I may not even want it and you can have it. From what I can tell, though, its too deep, pushing 24". AND loud. Of course, that can likely be fixed. It's an IBM X3650 Model 7979EHU. I should be getting it this week. Maybe i just need to slap a shipping lable on it to you lol.

What is the budget?

To do it right, It will cost more than putting a basic PC at every location you need.

THe problem you will run into is that most KVM switches are designed to run multiple Computers from One Keyboard.

Multiple Keyboards back to one computer is pretty rare. Its probably cheaper to do USB extensions to the areas where you want to put keyboards and mice and just plug them in when you need to use em.

Run a cat5 or 6 for sub to every monitor location. Then get a usb wireless keyboard. Get multiple sub keyboard receivers put in each room. 1 keyboard multiple locations

Crestron DM switch would do this but I assume it's outside your budget (?).

Maybe a USB hub at the rack and then Cat5 Baluns out to the keyboard mouse locations?
What do you mean you wanted it on the other wall - couldn't you have mentioned this when we prewired?

+1

I've never seen a tv that made a very good computer monitor. Also, the distance from chair to tv is usually too far to use a computer well.

Just get a laptop

This is what popped in my head as soon as i read the thread title.

If you want to setup a couple of stations in your house with a keyboard mouse monitor go ahead. Just bring your laptop over and dock it.

I tried a two computer scenario with a 27" imac and my 15" laptop. I constantly forgot something on one computer or the other. I went back to just a laptop.

put a mac mini in a sonnet 1U rack shelf

Use USB over Cat5 extenders to get a USB dongle for a wireless keyboard/mouse in an area that gets better reception.  or distribute with JAP and use the built in USB on their + models.

look at gyration. they have long range wireless mice and keyboard. i have used them many times. they work very well. unless your house is extremely large, if you centrally locate the rack, you will be good. even if you dont centrally locate rack, run a usb cable or extender to a central location for the transceiver.

Doesn't JAP have a USB on the transmitter with a USB receiver on each receiver? I'm pretty sure I looked into this once and they said it would work fine for an input device.
