i have the HR24 Receiver/DVR and using factory RF remote. All of a sudden:

1- If i change channel using up/down buttons, it will change up or down, and just keep going. It will not stop unless i press a number button that is also a channel that i receive. Such as 5 or 8.

2- Similar behavior in the guide, except i have to press exit to get out of the menu, which then changes the resolution output HD to non-HD and will toggle it again the next time i press exit.

3- If i try to change the channel to something like 229, it will only go to 29. any of the numeric keys will only work one time. Example, i cannot go to channel 11 because the second "1" will not be accepted , but i can got to channel 13.

SO FAR:

A- I know its not the remote, as i removed the batteries. Also, it haves the same behavior if I use the buttons on the face of the unit.

B- I have reset, unplugged, and forced a software update. No change.

C- Changed batteries in the factory remote.

I have seen the "runaway" type behavior in projects with Crestron and URC installs, but this is straight up factory remote controlled.

Ideas??

Seems like thats the solution to me as well. Just thought I should be able to find a solution without dealing with them.

Have you factory reset the unit yet?

I did not factory reset. Will I lose my recordings? I guess it doesn't matter if I end up getting a new unit anyway..

Yes, you will lose your recordings.

I had one of this exact model go bad. Lost fifty hours of stuff we wanted to see. That's really maddening.
A good answer is easier with a clear question giving the make and model of everything.

Unless you recorded nightly news, you didn't loose anything.
You just need to find other sources to watch what you missed.

So i started to reset the dvr, the first onscreen step was to reset the remote to IR.
As soon as i did that, it started working again. If i set it to rf, it quits working. I will try a new rf remote and see what happens.

Remember.. when in rf mode, even the front panel does not work. Weird !

You now have a working DVR that threatens to quit in old (or new!) ways at any time. I think you should get a few days' worth of snacks and watch everything recorded on that DVR before it dies. Just, first, get the new one on order NOW.

EDIT: Just realized we missed the entire last season of Shameless. It died with the DVR.

And who remembers what else? It's hard to remember what you never saw.

Ernie, you need this: [Link: tvshowtime.com]

I watch way too many programs to keep track of which episode I've seen last.
This keeps track of everything for me

shameless season 5 18 different sources [Link: kat.cr]

Not to mention the Hulus and the likes

As far as other programs that you can't remember, consider this a gift. You just gained hours and hours of additional time.

You just need to find other sources to watch what you missed.

Whenever someone says "just" or "simply" or "merely," they then leave out all the steps that must be followed. Often, the number of steps shows that "just" is an oversimplification.

I did lose something.
I lost the list of the things that were recorded on the DVR. Who programs a DVR and separately writes a list of what's being recorded? To rephrase what I said before, how can you tell what you missed when the list of things you recorded is gone?

Plus, one of the main advantages of having a DVR with all those channels is that I don't have to go find other services to see programs.

"What, your car doesn't work? Just research the bus routes to get you where you want to go! Buses go there, too!"

I do.

"What, your car doesn't work? Just research the bus routes to get you where you want to go! Buses go there, too!"

I use the tracking program I've listed above BECAUSE devices do fail.
Half the time I reset or replace a unit during 'off' season and forget about all the shows that I had in the season pass.

Other times, even though the DVR is set to record 'first run' only, the meta data is encoded incorrectly and programs either get missed or record multiple times.
Case is point "How it's Made". I can not get the recording of this show right and there is a particular show that records 8-12 per week, every 2-3 weeks apart.

Other shows are 'featured' or promoted outside of the 2 week guide capture and using the TVShow Time, I can enter it and see what's coming up months in advance.
