Thinking about selling and taking a rep job. I love this industry but man I am tired. If the last couple of years taught me anything it that family is everything and regular 16 hour days are just not worth it. I miss the days of being small.

I have known some guys that when they were in your position downsized and just kept the clients that they wanted to work with and did the jobs that they wanted.

Just cherry pick the good jobs and let others go after the jobs that you don't want.

You are right is that family is everything. The kids grow up before you know it and that time is lost for you forever.
If you are going to do the job...why not do it the right way?

Can't you just hire someone to take your place enough to scale yourself back to 8 or 6 hour days?

Doesn't a Rep travel most of the time? I would not want to be out on the road continually.

Why is it a joke? Do you think the Waltons are hanging around at walmart locations?

This is my thought too. Would you be trading one career that never lets you be home for another one?

I was once talking to someone who's wife regularly complains if he isn't home by 5:30 because her father was working all the time. Her father made a very very good living and she never had any wants that weren't fulfilled. But was still angry that daddy was never home. I pointed out that most people regularly work 10 to 12 hours a day. Middle and upper class workers put in those hours in a career to provide a comfortable life style for their loved ones. People in lower class categories regularly work 2 and 3 jobs to get by. But either way, not many Americans actually get to pull the 9 to 5 thing and have the life they want their family to have.

You would make a great speech writer for Trump. 2 comments directed at me so far with zero usable information in either.

I haven't tried to run my own company but hundreds of millions of other Americans have and tens of millions of those business owners have hired other people to manage day to day operations. I know a lady with 50 rental properties in Chicago. She doesn't know her tenants...she doesn't even cash the checks because someone else handles it for her.

Why is it so crazy that Jeff hires someone to do what he does? Or even half of what he does so that he can have normal hours?

If you've never run a small business, then you won't get it.

Keep doing what your doing but figure out a way to scale back your hours. Sorry reps but I think it's a s#$t job. You'll either work for a mfg and will travel all the time or you will work at a rep firm hocking crap you might not believe in. There is nothing worse than when a rep changes a line....

Rep: "All of Core problems are in the past I promise!"
Rep: "I've never seen any Denon problem with other dealers. Just do a microprocessor reset and that should fix it!"
Rep: "I know we where just the reps for Savant but now we are doing Elan and it's WAY better."
Rep: "X speaker is the absolute best in the market."
Same Rep one month later: "Y speakers are the absolute best in the market."
Same Rep two months later: "Z speakers are the absolute best in the market."
Rep: "They've corrected that problem."
Rep: "There is a firmware fix for that."
"Just when I thought you couldn't possibly be any dumber, you go and do something like this... and totally redeem yourself!"

Or maybe it's you that doesn't get it? Seems like tens of millions of Americans have been able to pull it off.

Actually, I get it quite well. Small business is tough. I've seen very few successful small companies where the owner could hire everything out and only work 6 hours a day. Typically, there's not that much profit to fund that many extra workers. But you continue to give out business advice based on your vast entrepreneurial experience.

I get what you are saying Mac, but it may come down to finding the right tech, and how picky WhiteVan is with his work.

Maybe increase your rates and be more selective like Dave said.
