We're using an outboard amp for Zone 2 from an RX-A750, not the internal amp channels.

I can't get the receiver set up to allow volume control of Zone 2 with the volume control. Somehow I was able to raise its volume through the menu, but going back in I can't figure out how I did it. The volume control does nothing at all until one step past -80 dB. Then it goes silent. That somehow means it's active; it just does nothing!

There's also some kind of interaction between Zone 2 and PARTY that I can't figure out. One aspect is that when you turn on PARTY, the next Zone 2 Power button push turns off Zone 2, even if it was off when you started.

I could go on and on about what I've tried, but if someone knows how to set this, please tell me. There are several variables here and they put the menus just enough apart, with setting names that don't seem to match the action, and I'm just lost.

I just accidentally found out that if the Zone 2 volume is all the way down, PARTY is silent.

I've not programmed an iPad to control a system before now, so I had another installer do it. He chose PARTY as the means of turning Zone 2 on and off, and that was okay. ...except that is set at one volume, not very loud, and I can't change it, either.

Thanks for any help.
A good answer is easier with a clear question giving the make and model of everything.

The zone 2 pre-outs are a fixed volume. There is no setting to allow variable volume on the pre-outs.

From page 84 of the manual:

"to adjust the Zone2 volume, press VOLUME or MUTE (when using the unit’s internal amplifier). When using an external amplifier, use the volume control on it."

I learned this the hard way too.

It's amazing how reading the manual can help!

I'm still wondering what else is hooked up in the system!

Finally a Yamaha problem ;) I never touch those things!

I think Line level variable outputs start the RX-X1xxx level.

It's amazing how one person can exhaustively go on and on about giving details, then admittedly holds back details. The same person often quotes the manual while somewhat shaming others for not checking the manual, then doesn't check the manual himself. Oh the hypocrisy.

Correct.

Only way to do this on the RX-A750 is to change Zone 2 speaker level output into a line level output with another fancy gadget.

Whoa! I've never seen one of these that didn't look like Sparkomatic OEM'd.

Yep. Somehow I was not able to find that. The one thing I've disliked about Yamaha products has been the small crucial notes! I have no excuse, though -- it's right there on the page "Controlling Zone2."

This was an update of a system I did about eight years ago. It's got a new TV, BD player, AVR, and cable box. He chose to keep his CD player, though it's got the same 5 CDs in it that he had when I wired it; his VCR, though it eats tapes; and his turntable, which is connected through an outboard Phono Preamp

Finally a Yamaha problem ;) I never touch those things!

I don't understand why you would never touch a product where you are AMAZED to hear that one of them has a problem, especially when the problem turned out not to be the product, but the installer! Wouldn't that instead be a reason to abandon all other brands? Oinkyo, Disintegra, Denot and Marnatz come to mind.
