Meh. No surprise the brand new Imax within walking distance of my house is digital. Looks like the other one I used to go to is 70mm, though (but also digital - kind of makes it hard to know what you'll get). Exactly.

You'll probably have to wait until the movie actually starts, and then find someone to talk to at the theater who actually knows something and can tell you what format they're using. Sounds... totally easy, right!
Need to find and get friendly with the projectionist, I guess.

Need to find and get friendly with the projectionist, I guess. At the same time, my boy is 7. Think he will even care? Maybe if I tell him it's special and its 3D is enough to seem impressive.

I can pretty much guarantee you he's not going to notice or care. The huge screen and loud sound is going to be plenty!
It takes a particular kind of perfectionist to worry about whether you're seeing 70mm film or high resolution digital, or if there's a 1 frame lipsync issue with sound, or if there's a blown sub somewhere behind the screen, or if the upper right channel is sounding a little raspy...
Every time there's some kind of glitch or problem with playback at home, the perfectionist in me feels compelled to point it out, and everyone else is like "what? I didn't notice anything..."

This is currently the best theater in the US, http://www.cinerama.com/Don't worry about the "IMAX" brand, this projector smokes them all.

I traveled to Chicago with my 7 year old son to see a show at a real imax, and to visit the Legoland there, 5 years ago. We went for Legoland, imax at the Navy Pier was a bonus.
I'd call imax to find out if there is a real one in Atlanta.

The company I was with a couple years back (Madrona Digital) upgraded the subwoofer section using Danley "Cine-monster" subs. Awesome sound. Incredible output all the ay down to a true 20 hz. Concert hall level.
