The secret codes work :-)

It has been easy....

Disable registration: code 5555 when quick menu is displayed (original problem of this ticket solved!)

Switch to PAL B/G (yes I am in Europe!): code 64724

back to NTSC: code 64687

There are codes to put the unit in DEMO and in DEV mode. I am investigating to see what these codes do.

Nice.
And it sounds like you do have some cool 'vintage' stuff at home.
The Escient still doesn't really qualify as something worthy of saving. But it does sound like you are having fun playing with it, so....

There are a few previous Escient dealers on here, that sold a lot of them. And still have a few in the field. I'm sure they are going to be very curious about your findings.
Just know that one of the reasons the product didn't go very far or last, was because of its reliability. They tend to have some problems from time to time. A lot of that was software related however, so maybe you can get around that.

I have one Escient SE-80 that is still in the field and working. The thing just won't die. Customer has enjoyed it however; but I think they are finally starting to want to upgrade to a newer system of music delivery.

D'oh, now the damn Fireball refuses to recognize my 777 no matter what I do.
When I first fired it up (before knowing it wants to call home) the Fireball switched the power on of the 777 and started scanning disc. I interrupted that process by hitting stop. From that point on, it NEVER accessed the changer again. Weird.
I have reset to default factory (secret code 8020 from setup screen) many times, but the changer is no longer detected. The changer menu in statistics , shows zero changers connected.

Maybe someone can give me a clue?

Thank you :-)
Rick

Having an old AMC Gremlin = "have you collected your money from the scrapyard yet?"

Hey now, my first car was an AMC Gremlin!!!

My dad bought it for me to drive, I totaled it three weeks later. My brother used to say I totaled it just so I would not have to drive it.

If you find a way to recover content stored on the escient's hard drive, please post your success. I have three units setting on a shelf that I would love to recover the content from. The hard drive didn't fail, but the unit did and they will not boot up.

Escient hard drives are just EXT formatted. connect em to a machine running linux and copy everything to a new drive.

You can pretty much boot any computer into a Linux OS with a usb stick.

Tried. The hard drive showed up as blank and the only option was to format it

It would be cool if you could get it to call out to your own RaspberryPI or similar that would interpret the request and scour the net for data. I am sure there is some old Phone modem that could be set to pick up and then transfer via RS-232 to the PI then to USB.
I may be schizophrenic, but at least I have each other.

Hey Rick,

I am actually listening to my music off my Escient as I am writing this. There is a lot of information on AVS forum here and a lot of active users !! [Link: avsforum.com]

Please continue your hacking, and I would really love to learn how to use the codes you mention. PLEASE (puuhleasee) PM me about these codes.

Completely power off both units - remove the power plugs. Connect the power and then turn on the systems....it may be that you did try this. i think the sequence is Escient Power and then it should trigger the Sony.

There is also a menu in Setup to check the connections.

Good luck !! Its not dead yet!! :-)

Rick, since this is a hobby for you try the AVS forum, you will likely find a more inviting crowd...this is a professional forum focused on current product not hack DIY projects of old unsupported gear....just my .02 cents...have fun with the boat anchor project.
What part of "A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed." do you not understand?

Just FYI, Escient never used Linux on these models.
It used PSOS first, and VxWorks afterwards. So no ext* filesystem to speak of.
We had some success in hacking both O.S. if you are interested just join us in the Escient group on google groups.

Regards the AMC Gremlin.

You can do this:

[Link: hemmings.com]

Or find a bone stock one that WILL bring something around 10k. They are after all is said and done, more than a bit rare.

Like lots of other "ugly as sin" cars, they have become a bit of a collector item.

How about the AMC "fishbowl"?

Who would have ever thought one of those monstrosities would be worth anything?

Sadly, even the freaking Yugo will become a collector item.... OMG!
