I read the comparo here:

[Link: apple.com]

For everyday streaming of iTunes movie/television content, Netflix, etc. controlled by a third-party IR remote control, I'm not really seeing the benefit of the 4th gen piece at +$100...

What do you guys think?

The 4th gen gives you voice control. Who doesn't want to feel like a moron while trying to talk to their TV?

I think its all about the apps.... The 4th gen supports an App store and tvOS, it could make it a more compelling devices for Apple centric customers. They seem to be having a spat with Amazon right now. I would love to see an Amazon app on Apple TV just to help consolidate streaming boxes for customers. I hope HDhomerun and Sling jump on board for live TV support. So I think it has big appeal.

It seems to me the App store content will likely led to the success of the device vs its competitors. With the army of Apple devs out there I think the race is over already, it will become the defacto media player choice.

Further - I think the it is best interface for the average person. Simple and easy to navigate. I am not a fan of Apple in general, but they tend to to a good job in GUI and usability, IMHO....

If this is a success, I wonder what it means to Home Kit proliferation....

I picked up 10 for two jobs and one of those happen to end up at my house ;) The remote is really cool and it's much easier to navigate with it's scroll pad. Set up was a breeze using Bluetooth to import all of your iPhones account settings into the ATV. This won't be a huge help for setting up customer devices but it's nice for the end user. I tried searching for the two apps I wanted to test only to find they aren't out yet. So I'm guessing it will be a month or more before Plex/SlingTV/others submit their app into apple. But that's the main reason for me to purchase the newer ATV. I cannot comment on the IR placement or the control of the device because since my move 8 months ago, I haven't installed a control system. Even though I have a Savant host and an XP8s in a box somewhere LOL.

I don't ever plan on needing more than the 32gb but that is to be seen. With 3 women in the house, I don't see a lot of video games in my future.

The remote bluetooth with makes it great for placement behind TV's.

Overall I think it's great and I would fret over spending another $75 for one.

Does it seem to respond to the same IR codes as older Apple TV? How far does the blutooth remote work?

Sounds like the IR works but IP has changed. Also note there is no longer an optical out so no more ATV's into house audio unless you want to extract the audio out of the HDMI.

So perhaps the better question for integrators is whether it's going to work better to do the basics that clients in their family room or living room like to do. That is, Netflix and basic video sources. Will the new one integrate with a single remote control properly, or is it going to require the use of the OEM remote?

Sorry but i think the Amazon Fire TV is way better.

4K output, IP control, 4x faster processor, and yes if you want to look like that moron, it has voice control too.

GUI is easy to use and looks slick.

As an Amazon Prime customer I have not yet had to pay extra for anything I have elected to watch
What do you mean you wanted it on the other wall - couldn't you have mentioned this when we prewired?

We have gone to recommending Roku over Apple TV, unless the customer purchases video through iTunes a lot -- which I haven't yet come across surprisingly.

I think I prefer a Roku also, but if clients have all iPhones and iPads, it seems like an Apple TV makes more sense for simple airplay stuff.
