It can learn any codes you want to use. I programmed a URC remote the other day for one, and they have a codeset labeled 4th Gen Apple TV. I do not think the codes worked though, until I learned them into the Apple TV. YMMV.

How did you learn them. Isn't the included remote BT and not IR?

Go into the AppleTV menu Settings, and there is a section where you can learn IR codes for each function. I believe the old Apple TVs had this feature as well.

I hope to go back to the job site tomorrow, this time with my laptop and and not so pressed for time. I will first try placement of the emitter as suggested. If it won't work with the URC IRDB Gen 4 code set, I will load the older Gen 3 code set and see if I can get anything. Barring any of that working, I guess I will learn the Gen 3 codes into this ATV and move on. I would think that one of the code sets will work, unless the new URC Gen 4 codes are bad.

I may set the remote to IR (instead of RF) and get the codes to work first, and then once I know I have proper codes, set the remote back to RF and try to place the emitter correctly.

It's interesting some are having issues with the commands. We have been using the same commands since generation 1 without issue.

I will probably try the Gen 1 command set, if the Gen 4 won't work. When I programmed the URC remote last week, they had not yet picked up the ATV. I dropped by yesterday (w/o my laptop) to slap a few volume controls in the system that had arrived late and the wife informed me that hubby had finally bought the ATV. I already had the hdmi and emitter waiting for it, so I connected it, hoping the codes would work.

I've had issues with URC and Control 4

The strangest one for me, that I have not heard others mention, is when the play/pause button works for iTunes but not on Netflix.

I was able to go back last Thursday, and here is what I discovered. Remember, earlier last week I did not have my laptop.

The AppleTV Gen 4 codes (URC IRDB) did not work.
Original AppleTV codes in IRDB DID work!

I had basically placed the emitter in the middle of the front and once I had the correct codes, it worked flawlessly. So it seems that most of my anguish was related to using the Gen 4 codes in the URC IRDB, when older codes should have been used. I have no idea what those Gen 4 codes do, but I've seen other codes in the URC IRDB that are useless (recently Channel Master DVR+).

So...in my experience, older Gen codes work, Gen4 codes do not, and IR placement is not that picky

Ran into this today. Had to use older IR set. But I did find the IR location picky. It was with a MXW-920 and MRF-350

Ok, at wits end here. Even though I am not a pro, I have been programming URC remotes for over 10 years and have successfully programmed MX-900's, 3000's 980's. I even got the ill-fated 810 to work.

But this Apple TV Gen 4 thing had me ready to throw it across the room.

So here is what I have found.

1) The Select|Play|Pause (SPP) is the same command for all 3 functions*
2) This command works from my Gen 3 remote for all 3 commands.
3) The Apple TV responds (LED lights) to all 3 commands from Gen 3 Remote.
4) My MX-890 SPP command does not work the Play/Pause Functions
5) My MX-890 SPP command does work the Select Command.
6) I learned the SPP Command to the Play Button on my 890
7) The learned command won't work.

So I really don't understand why 5 works, but not 4.

* But not really. On my Gen 3 remote, the Select button will Play/Pause, but the Play/Pause button will not select in all instances.

So I was getting pretty frustrated until I read back through this thread. So a HUGE THANK YOU to Audiophiliac for posting about the ability of the ATV to learn other commands. So now my Gen 4 ATV is responding to commands from an old DirecTiVo remote and working great. So again, thanks.

But it should not have been this hard. And keeping with the original topic, the IR emitter is placed in the center from L>R slightly below the midline.
