I'm using a urc mrf-350. The last tv used an ir emitter so I spliced a male stereo connector to it and plugged it in to the rear IR in port.
I can't get it to respond, even after reversing the wire pair. I thought it was as simple as that. What am I missing?

Tip is signal, sleeve is ground, ring is not connected.
Is the firmware current on the TV? Try doing a reboot on it: press and hold the power on the remote (Sony remote) for 10 seconds. You should see it power down, red/green/blue/yellow swirlies and then android logo.

Yeah, I spent ages troubleshooting that one. Everything worked on the control system except for the IR input on the X850B... I was about to give up and resort to using an IR eye (which doesn't look great on these units), when I must have plugged in the cable "incorrectly", and suddenly everything worked - at least for a minute.
Eventually I realized that if I didn't push the cable in to the final stop, everything worked fine... but as soon as that last click was heard, death. The jack was firm enough to hold the cable correctly at this "1/16th away from the end" position, and it's been working fine for 10 months.

So is it the plug is grounding out when inserted all the way?
I know that happens when using snap emitters with zektor solocat extenders. There are tiny plastic washers that help

The last 850b that I did I used a mono to stereo (stereo at the TV) cable off of a Binary HDBT receiver. Works great. Mono cable did not work, though I could make it work temporarily doing what Daniel did.
Assuming it is same as the 850b mono should NOT work, regardless of which control system you use.

Just for reference, my issues were with a stereo cable. In fact, I tried two completely different ones.

In case of doubt, it's probably a safer bet to use a stereo connector and not connect the ring to anything.
A mono connector is basically a stereo connector with the ring and sleeve connected together, and if the Sony has any problem shorting the "ring" position of its jack to ground, then a mono connector won't work.
It's genius to find that the IR connection works when the plug isn't inserted all the way. It often takes genius to overcome idiocy like that.

I can strongly confirm this is the case. I just spent two days wondering why I could control these TV's in my shop with a test cable (TRS with T and S connected only) and then I couldn't in the field with TS mono connectors. What a fn stupid thing Sony has done here. BTW ring and sleeve also work so the tip and the ring are both + and the sleeve -. This is why half in with a mono cable also will work. Thanks Sony!

There is no standard, so whatever Sony has done is okay IF THEY DOCUMENT IT. And they probably didn't, right?
It makes sense to have ring and sleeve work, and in fact that might be the intended design. Why does it make sense? Because they might have been planning to make it possible to plug in an IR sensor there, and the only way to keep from shorting the power to ground when inserting or removing the plug is to put power on the tip.
Like documentation, though, the question arises: is that why they did it that way? Are they communicating that in the owner's manual?
