They pushed out an update to the sat boxes a day or two later from the announcement and said DirecTV Now an ATT company

Yes.

I fear it will end badly.

Directv is/was my "service provider that sucks the least". I am a customer to, have been one for over a decade.
I fear they will try to migrate users to a consolidated sat/uverse hardware platform in the not too distant future, leaving satellite only for people outside of Uverse service areas.

Being that when AT&T first ran some fiber to our area and experimented with TV service, they resold DirecTV over fiber, I have a fear you are correct.
