Bad assed suburban white boys trying to be bad assed black dudes! ha ha ha
Nope, just a suburban white boy who grew up on Long Island when rap was first becoming a genre of music. Was a metalhead in my younger days, never tried to emulate the rap/hip hop culture, just liked the music. I was the longhaired kid in the Metallica patched denim jacket for most of my teenage years, as far from a Malibu's most wanted looking poser as you could find.
I don't care for about 80% of current rap music. But everything from old school pioneers like Slick Rick, Doug E Fresh, Beasties and Run DMC to NWA, Snoop, Tupac and the like are good if you ask me.
My only street cred is I did see Boyz N The Hood on opening night, in a rather diverse neighborhood (and survived).
I am a trained professional..... Do not attempt this stunt at home.

I enjoyed the movie (MTV movie) "Hustle and Flow".
I appreciate that. I liked Tupac, RUN DMZ and a few others... Not black of course, biut I like some Eminem now and then.

The first home I bought you could see the Compton courthouse out the back window. Not the greatest area on the planet. The Watts towers are interesting though.
While I'm not much of a fan of rap (I get my fill after about 15 mins of quality rap), I despise hop hop (and there is a difference) almost as much as I despise modern/popular C&W (almost).
Like it or not, I think we all need to recognize rap as a pure musical art form, urban roots music, just like original delta blues was a true rural roots music.
And usually pure musical art forms go on to influence other forms and get imbedded in a variety of sub genres. Certainly the blues was a big influence on Rock n Roll, C&W, R & B, etc...just as rap was a big influence on hip hop and modern pop.
Chasing Ernie's post count, one useless post at a time.
Well, I believe you are from Chi-town. I grew up in a predominately black area. You cant snow the snow-man. My school was 8% caucasian. I had no problem with the "brothers", and still don't. Grew up with them.
I just have to laugh at the kids from the 'burbs caught up in inner city black culture, trying to emulate that experience... Again that scene in Office Space is priceless.
As far from racist as you can imagine here. I'm just saying it has always been fascinating to see the rich white kids trying to re-create the black inner - city experience, when they have no clue, but wanna think of them selves as inner city bad asses. Ice, ice baby. Macklemore... yeah OK
The fact that rap music touches a nerve is fine, but I have always had an issue with the white kids trying to look and sound like inner city gang members.
Justen Beiber, anyone?
Bruce, I've tried to defend you throughout this time, but, posts like this are just stupid. I grew up and still live in Irvine, CA. If anyone from here is from the OC or from SoCal they'll know why its relevant. I grew up listening to rap music. It was my first experience with American culture of any kind. It is what allowed me to connect to the kids at school and settle into American Life. I don't pretend to understand the struggles that many artists speak about, but, not all rap music is about struggles and neither is the culture. I've been immersed in the rap and even street wear culture for years now. True fans don't care about one another's race and they definitely don't care about where one grew up. It's people like you that look at the scene from the outside or through the media and make assumptions.
ohhh crap, i'm a middle aged white guy from the city.... south side of chicago no less...
so what does this make me?
it makes me waisted away again in martgaritaville....
guess i will have to pack heat to go see this movie.... good thing i conceal carry
Ed will be known as the Tiger Woods of the integration business, followed closely with the renaming of his company to "Hotties A/V". The tag line will be "We like big racks and tight holes"...

As a rock genre based person (metal, alternative, grunge primarily) I do love some 90's gangsta rap. I like Biggie and 2Pac, but prefer 2Pac over all for many reasons. I've tried to get into rap post 90's and there's been a few exceptions, but it just doesn't work for me. Arguably, Hip-hop has lost touch with the emotions that made it great. Mainstream music is like Mainstream Media, I just can't drink the kool-aid anymore.
Slightly off topic here but I was listening to the Opie Radio interview with Bert Kreischer (Director of "Kurt Cobain: Montage of Heck"), and in it he said that, and I'm paraphrasing, that "He just heard the new Kid Cudi album and it's the first album in twenty years that reminded him of the power and authority of "In Utero", and that he's bringing the rock back and plays all the instruments on the whole album himself. So, I'm hoping something great happens here.

Now, I've never given Kid Cudi the time of day, but that in-direct quote from Bert Kreischer has me waiting impatiently.
