Vizio REALLY = Disruptive!!!

For a few years now the term "disruptive" has been used in business and technology reporting where the word "new" would have sufficed. We've finally got something really disruptive going on, but the Vizio IPO is the first glimmer that it's been going on for several years.

Please read Julie's "Backlash Coming? Vizio IPO Not about TVs but Mining Customer Data" at [Link: cepro.com].

Vizio has disrupted the normal way of selling TVs, and has done so on the way to infecting our homes with device usage reporting machines! Why, those sneaky a-holes!!!

Vizio's low prices have caused consumers to trade off better looking TVs for cheaper TVs that look "okay." Vizio's distribution, for years mostly (AFAIK) through Costco, has disrupted the Custom Installer's ability to stay in business by selling TVs of higher quality that have higher margins.

And it turns out that Vizio seems to have done this to establish a large base of usage monitors in peoples' homes. Every Vizio TV connected to the internet, apparently, reports on the usage patterns of the TVs to Vizio's data services company, Inscape.

"Yes, Mr. Customer, you can get a Vizio TV and you will save a bit of money. If we connect the cool internet services built into it, you will be part of a large network of households captured by Vizio to report your habits and usage. If that's an okay price for you, then... okay! Get a Vizio!"
A good answer is easier with a clear question giving the make and model of everything.

Do people think Vizio is the only one doing this? I don't blame them for people buying the overly cheap crap and getting the ball rolling on the race to the bottom. I'd blame stores like Costco first, who really pushed it into people's minds to buy cheap. Overall, the internet is what really led that charge, but manufacturers are trying to compete at this stupidly low profit margin now. Ask Pioneer how well it works selling the higher priced panels that look great?

I've given up on the expectation of having any privacy anymore... Phones that can be tracked, TV's that report usage, laptops whose cameras can be hacked on and on...

Doesnt matter, Obama is going to haul most of us away to the Texas Walmarts after he turns us gay, and takes away our guns, and converts us to muslims, right?

Everyone's already doing it. What makes this remarkable is that it's the first IPO really that puts this principle in everyone's face: We are here to sell more devices so we can monitor and monetize you better.

Samsung, Tivo and the others do it, too, but they've never had a reason to be so blatant about it.

Nah, he'll leave that up to the next Bush, who will proudly proclaim "Mission Accompished!".

Ernie, I believe the first company to push Vizio was Best Buy....

Every time you agree to terms and conditions, you are giving your consent for your activities to be monitored, tracked, recorded, used for who knows what purposes, and all kinds of weird things that you really do not agree with. But if you disagree, you cannot do the thing you are trying to do, so you just scroll to the bottom and click agree.

So if you really are against all this now normal stuff, just click disagree and live with the consequences. :)

Now why you reckon he wants to turn us gay?

Costco was the first to push Vizio, then Wal-Mart. Best Buy did not join that bandwagon to much later.

If users would start returning the sets, objecting to the terms of service, the MBA's would start to get a message. Or, customers could start demanding to see the terms of service prior to the sale. This could then become more interesting down the road if the terms of service change and become unacceptable at that time.

Really, the next step will be to change the terms to match the software terms -- the set will be licensed, not owned.

And, what happens if the future terms change to include a "maintenance fee". Failure to pay this fee will result in "brick" status for the set.

It doesn't matter what they put in the terms and conditions.

Just like cigarettes, you can put that this shit will kill you and people will still buy it.

I guarantee you that if I put a big ass note on the side of TV, stating that I will monitor the built in camera and not give you a way to shut it off, but for that privilege I will discount the TV by $9.95, I would still sell thousands of units.

People are stupid, stupid creatures. They want comfort and convenience, no matter the cost to their health or lifespan.
How many would voluntarily give up $10 per paycheck to balance the federal budget? We're no different than Greeks.

I'm in favor of a blanket $10 deduction as long as I am exempt.

He doesn't have long in office to run the country into the ground and if that's his goal he's doing a very shitty job. Maybe you should find some other reason you think he's a bad president other than he's black.

Meanwhile it appears that The Donald is the best thing the GOP can put forth. Conservative voters have always been high on chromosomes.

What's your enlightenment?
