I have a good friend who desires an PC based IP contol system to be a media server and control a multizone audio system.. I know it's not the greatest idea at this time. He knows this as well but he will foot the bill and I can get the experience I need with an investment of my time only. I need hardware and software suggestions. I am definately going ahead with this project so any help is appreciated.

Shoe. I will second mike's link. The Digilinx product line up and development is well done. They are still working on the streaming video part, but there are other controllable solutions in terms of Video distribution. Your question did not go into detail as to what your customer is after. Digilinx will save you some time. If this is going to be a one-off project, I personally would not be giving away my services under any circumstances. I may have an allowance for service and upgrades though. JMO. I have not used the Crestron solution for controlling WM9 in windows, this may be another alternative. USing a CP2e with browser controll and a bullet-proof controller for your other source gear. Maybe some others out there can add to this part.

Basically, we are doing a multizone audio system with a pc based control system and the pc doing double duty as a music server. The plan is to use various touch screen interfaces for main room theater control, multi room control and to view music content on the pc/server. Basically, this is trying to do crestron/escient economically. I do all of my friends work gratis anyway and I;ve been wanting to try IP based control anyway. I was working with Premise systems but they are in a state of flux to say the least. I am looking for software and hardware recommendations

CQC ( www.charmedquark.com) is one of the most powerful IP based control systems available. It does not include native media management, though that's coming, it concentrates more on the core automation services. But you can control other applications, or if you want to use it to control a hardware based media box, I'll be glad to do the driver for you.
