Prewired a home last week. 7) rooms stereo +1 surround area. Sent out my breakdown spelling out wire (materials & labor to do so). Customer owns a home next door he is selling.

He mentioned, that he is going to remove all of the currently owned stuff and transfer it over to the new place...

He wants me to yank all of his old stuff and re-install (1) Plasma, and all of the speakers etc.

I bill him today for the pre-wire, and he flips out becuase he THOUGHT my price included R&R-ing all of the old sh*t into this new house!!!

Come on, guy-REALLY?

How would you handle this?

I'm looking at maybe a good day and a half to two days to R&R all that crap!

This... ...is why I drink!

My favorite is when they come back and ask "wait, the pre-wire didn't include all the speakers?"

A scope of work and clear understanding of work to be performed up front.

Scope of work was poorly explained...

There should have been no surprises on either parties part if all was done by the book.

As a negotiating strategy some people always "misinterpret" the scope of the work.

Yes, there shouldn't be any surprises. However, sometimes you can think everything is clear and everyone is on the same page, then the other party claims differently. You can put a detailed explanation of what work is to be done and prices in writing and have everyone sign it, but even with that, some times, someone may try the, "I thought it was..."

I plan on being the king of "specific exclusions" in contracts.

Would have put a line on this one, knowing full well that he was going to want the gear R&Red. "Does not include labor or additional materials to relocate existing COE (customer owned equipment) from current residence to new one. Additionally, does not include car detailing, pet sitting or laundry service".

I have had a few clients like this over the years that thought anything and everything audio/video/automation was included in our scope of work.
I am a trained professional..... Do not attempt this stunt at home.

Tell him that you KNOW he understood what he was paying for before you started. Show him what was written.

I could not have been any clearer in my scope of work description... We will prewire with 14/4 for a pair of speakers in the following rooms back to the main equipment center, and wire the surround area with 5 runs of 14 / 2 bla bla bla.

This is a pre-wire breakdown ... NO discussion whatsoever of removing hos old crap and re-installing it.

Anyways... the rest of my day went downhill from there... the crazies and time-wasters came out to haunt us today...

Beer time now. Thank lord.

Scope of work disagreements are usually resolved. Stand your ground.

If you communicated clearly, he will need to change his perspective or lose your services.
