In addition to the Niles and Russound, I'm looking at the Elan Z Series for multi room distribution. Anybody have any thoughts? Ideally I want to piece it together and not spend too much at the outset. I'm also quite happy to programme the keypads myself but one dealer has told me that Elan won't allow that. I find this strange considering the wealth of info on the net regarding the programming of Niles/Russoud/Xantech systems.

I have installed several Russound units and can say they are the most user friendly units out there. The LCD keypads are perfect (and offer the cool ability to change the background color). With the IR repeaters, you don't need the additional keypad controller (just program a universaql remote control for the client) though I have installed one in a remote gym and it was a snap. However, in all the installations I have used Niles in-ceiling speakers, specifically the 850 and 650 HD's and OS20's outdoors. This results in reasonably priced systems that sound great and do everthing the clients want. I typically hook the components up with a monster cable powercenter for voltage triggered control but Russound offers one too (I just haven't used it). If I was to pick minor things I'd change about the Russound amplifier, it would be to double the units power output and add an integral tuner (a la Niles).

I have be Beta testing the Niles 4.6ci PreAmp in my own home and found it to be a great unit. The keypad choices are better than the ZR-4630. You also have the silencer VC that can be incorped into the system. As of today I received the alpha version of the pc interface for programming. VERY NICE & for those of you that have done Itellicontrols you can convert your .lin files to be used in programmin of the 4.6ci. Just for ref. there will not be a pc based software for Gloria as it is intendted to be an entry level piece. Email me with further ?'s if like.
