Selling a MRX-10 and i received this "question" from the guy

I am an electrical engineer and want to program my system on my own. I fine it ridiculous that URC does not give the software out with their product. A moderately trained monkey could program this stuff. Well I assume thats the case, I haven't actually programmed any of this yet since I don't have the software, but its not rocket science. Anyway, I assume you are providing the software with this unit, right? I want to make sure I am getting a "complete" system and not someone trying to pull one over my eyes by selling a useless paperweight.

My Response:

Hello XXXXXX,

I am a highly qualified CI that has spent years building a successful business around professional products. I find it ridiculous that anyone should assume they know better and assume what we do as an industry isn't rocket science. I also spend countless hours out of my week trying to make things work that electrical engineers design and never seem to actually use what they design. It truly is not rocket science after all! You know what rocket science is? not jeopardizing my dealership by providing you the software for a "paperweight"!

Thanks for looking :)

His Response:

Easy there chief. Did I hit a nerve? It's not your policy, it's URC's. Why are you all bent out of shape over a stupid policy some company that is not your made? Don't get all butt hurt. So, are you gonna provide the software?

My Final response:

I am pretty sure I'm not the one Butt Hurt over URC's policy,Infact I embrace it. There is a reason they don't offer it to end users; and to put it bluntly that is to protect dealers that have spent a substantial amount of time and investment into learning the software and products.

And no I will not be providing the software with the sale.

Thanks for looking!

Made my day!!
There is no truth anymore. Only assertions. The internet world has no interest in truth, only vindication for preconceived assumptions.

Do you have an Amazon store too?

No wonder URC has a problem online. Their own dealers don't give a shit.

I wish I had a list of all of my engineer clients!

They are good at what they do.

I'm good at what I do.

That's why they gave me a call.

Consumer Electronics is anything but logical if you want it to work.

Many don't care to go through the learning curve and just want it done.

To the engineers that enjoy this as a hobby,I understand.

I started there,now it's my job!

So,

At the last minute, you folded and gave him the software, because he seemed like such a nice guy?

I would've told him yes it comes with the software, the software is in the remote. I downloaded a demo program into the remote and you just need to upload it to your computer.

So I am not the only one AsianPro is trying to buy stuff from.
I may be schizophrenic, but at least I have each other.

Don't let anyone try and shame you for selling crap online. If URC (or Crestron or Control 4 or whoever) doesn't want their gear sold on ebay they should provide us with a buy back program of some sort or an official "Used product dealer only" forum where we can list demo and old stock products to get them out of our warehouse.

Or those same companies could actually do something about the NEW product that shows up on line, rather than claim they are.

While I abide by my dealer agreements, in general I don't have any issues giving the user a copy of his configuration. My customers are not likely to publish the program and since my programs are so specific, another CI would be pretty dumb to attempt to use it and would probably spend more time trying to learn my style than starting from scratch.

As for disposing of demo's, I would rather keep the unit for emergencies or give a good customer a good deal than post the unit online. I'll probably get a better price from my customer anyway.

An online D.I.Y. is not my customer.

As far as the original "electrical engineer" is concerned, I don't know why he would want to mess with the commercial controllers. Something as simple as a Raspberry Pi offers him more flexibility than any of the commercial systems. (at the cost of some development time) My engineer friends would be happy to have me to supply them with something, than waste their time learning yet another platform -- and they are capable of designing any of this.
