The text at [Link: reddit.com]. This might well be called "The Evils of PAUSE." I've paused the DVR, then wandered away and gone to bed, only to have it start playing 90 minutes later.

I was looking for my iPhone at 5am this morning when leaving for work. Everyone else in the house was quietly sleeping. Couldn't find the phone so used Find Phone. I figured it could find the phone fast enough that it wouldn't disturb anyone.

Within a few seconds I was greeted by a massive sound wall of BEEP BEEP BEEP coming from all around me at 120 decibels. The dog went ballistic. My wife woke up and and started yelling something but I could only hear every second word between the BEEPs. Then the children came running into our room from their bedroom crying. I figured out what was going on and went into the living room to turn off the stereo. Couldn't find the remote in my dazed state so in desperation pulled the plug from the wall. Silence. Apart from the dog barking, wife yelling and children crying.

Last night I had been streaming Spotify to our stereo system through AirPlay. It is a powerful stereo with speakers mounted all over the house. I remember that the volume on my iPhone had way been down so I had just turned the stereo up to compensate. When I went to bed I paused Spotify.

TLDR: today I learned that AirPlay streams Find iPhone at maximum volume to your stereo.
A good answer is easier with a clear question giving the make and model of everything.

The moral of the story? Find iPhone works! Especially when you leave it connected to your sound system at full tilt. I think a deaf man could have found it. Good for Apple.

Huh? He was using Airplay, so the phone wasn't connected to the sound system.

Find iPhone played over his audio system. Finding the phone was made impossible by Find iPhone not just playing on the phone's speaker.

The phone's volume was turned "way down" on the phone itself. It's not clear that the phone was actually inaudible, but it certainly was much quieter than the audio system! How could a deaf man have found a phone sounding at, say, 65 dB when the whole-house system was playing at 120 dB (okay, let's be reasonable: 85 dB)?

I'd say Find iPhone works if a)it sounds at full volume and b)it only sounds on the phone, not on any external device unless actually wired into the headphone jack.

Uh, anyone who streams from their phone knows the ringer and voice comes through the headphone jack or audio stream. But that's not the issue- the user needs to remember how they were using the phone AND SHUT OFF THEIR A/V SYSTEM WHEN THEY'RE DONE USING IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

FWIW, I think the normal ringer volume is more quiet than Find Your Phone, so using something like google call or another phone is a less disturbing way to locate a cell phone.

Uh, what? The guy could not find his phone. He used Find my Phone. He found his phone. Sounds like it worked flawlessly to me. Did I miss part of the story?

That is what I love about automation. My system shuts itself off at 2:00AM everyday. If the wife forgets to turn the audio off and just closes her Pandora app, if the kids leave a TV on somewhere, If I leave the lights or music on in the shop when I come in for dinner and forget them, IT ALL TURNS OFF.

Find My Phone worked flawlessly, but the system wasn't shut down and caused all kinds of mayhem.

So not only did it find his phone, it also taught him a valuable lesson. I think in some regions, this is called a "two fer"?

The app did not work properly.
Find the phone app should not play thru AirPlay.
it should default to device ring.
Even with headphone jack usage, it should play thru headphone jack and the speaker.

I am so sick of getting calls about "rooms turning on by themselves".

Uh..no...you left those rooms on and let your streaming service time out. When you started up your streaming service the next day or a week later or whatever...those zones that you left on started playing again.

no, The guy could not find his phone. He used Find my Phone, you added He found his phone.

unless you show me where he said he found the phone. I am guessing eventually he did, or maybe he just remembered where he left it when he was streaming. But assuming what he said was true. "I figured out what was going on and went into the living room to turn off the stereo. Couldn't find the remote in my dazed state so in desperation pulled the plug from the wall." would not have happened, if find my phone helped him find the phone originally, also "Silence. Apart from the dog barking, wife yelling and children crying." means that there was no BEEP BEEP BEEP of Find my phone for him to hear to pin point the phone location after he stopped the audio equipment.

The story might have been a bit different if the phone was plugged into the audio equipment, and so going there to stop the audio equipment would have lead him to find the phone, but airplay means that his phone could be anywhere on the network (i.e. in the home) so the going to the audio equipment is useless.
