How much time do you spend working with the speaker distance settings? If you don't, you won't be accurate.

All that matters is when I'm done, the customer likes my settings more than what the auto setup does. I'm not saying I don't use the supplied mic. But I don't get upset if it won't reach the receiver. Probably about 50/50 of when it can be used.

Proud member of the "use supplied mic for distance and change center channel and subwoofer levels afterward" crew.

LOL - thats been my usual for most systems. So beyond the radio shack SPL, what would be the skeleton crew of audio tweaking gear that would make a true difference? I've also gotten in the habit of bringing several different movie discs with scenes I'm familiar with to test how the speakers sound as I'm sure others have. If so, what discs do you use?

This thread makes me wonder about a few things in light of the comment in the original post about the AVR being hundreds of feet from the speakers-

How far are receivers located from speakers?

If more than 100', what's being done about signal losses in the speaker cabling?

If the speakers are far from the AVR, is the signal being degraded by the distance? If so, is it noticeable, or not enough to worry about?

@tca- based on your comment about all equipment being placed in one area, does this mean you are using nothing that uses software that needs to be loaded e.g., CD/DVD/BD and all media is streamed over the internet or from a NAS/USB device or uses Cable/Sat/U-Verse for TV programming?
My mechanic told me, "I couldn't repair your brakes, so I made your horn louder."

Use the AVR's onboard calibration first with the included mic. The calibration circuit and the included mic are designed to work together. Use a wide bandwidth Balun or extender for remote equipment installs. The onboard Auto Calibration Circuit will do more than you could in a few minutes so use it as a reference starting point. At the minimum it checks; Distance and Wiring Polarity.

Yamaha's YPAO is quite good and allows you to manually pick and adjust PEQ for all channels.
