Device going inside is 17w x 17h x 3.5 deep
Height and depth no problem for a normal can but I need something to accommodate the width.
Anyone?

you're going to have to get a surface mount enclosure. Do a search for surface mount MENA enclosure. We have used the Hubbell ones before
