This group of diyers is following some seriously cheap advice. If you read around a bit, the common theme is Monoprice, BestBuy, and Logitech.
It is amazing to see these guys thinking because they are paying the least amount of money for even just hdmi cables, that they are somehow winning.

I tried trolling, suggesting Sonos and RTI- It was like talking to drunks at a new bar.

If my sister asked me about a universal remote today I would probably tell her to get a harmony ultimate. That's because I know my sister has a very simple system and she doesn't have a ton of money. She can pick it up herself and programming takes minutes.

Is it the best solution? No.
Is it the only solution? No.
Is it the most elegant solution? No.
Will it work? Yes.

There isn't any other apples to apples products on the market. Harmony has no competition in this bit of the market. The bit where people want hand held remotes, a free iOS app, easy DIY configuration, under a grand.

Without the harmony my sister and others like her would just do without a universal remote. I think the harmony products ultimately make us more visible...like Bose.

I think you are right on all points except it taking minutes. Ive messed with a few harmony remotes for friends and found their cloud based wizard software to make for a painfully slow experience.

I agree, points taken- but what I am saying is that the immense race to the bottom line with HTIB, cheapest systems is overly present. If I weren't in this industry I would probably follow suite.

$1,000 will get you a professionally programmed pro-control .r series handheld and processor and iPad app. It outperforms the harmony in every aspect.

that is programming the shit out of it. if you left it auto programmed with comparable programming to logitech, you could get this for $775

ProControl is a no brainier for under $1000

I would never recommend Harmony to anyone except a PIA DIYer...they can spend hours programming.
Knowing that Gold went up a few K makes me think "well now I have to do a better job on selling more equipment".

DIYers are NEVER going to spend anywhere close to $1000 for a remote control solution that they would need to have a professional come in and program...  They're DIYers, that's totally against everything they believe!

Harbor Freight!

...oh, wait, no, that's a spoof on Harbor Freight called "Hazard Fraught."

And I have to admit that when I thought I might need to use a Sawzall ONCE, because I hadn't needed one in twenty years, I spent the twenty bucks needed to get the Harbor Freight one. And it worked more than once! And nobody died!

I have a good scary TSA/Harbor Freight story for you, if I get enough upvotes.....
A good answer is easier with a clear question giving the make and model of everything.

Ernie - I'm AMAZED you haven't used a sawzall in 20 years!!!  I guess that explains why you see no need for an impact driver!

Im sure once Harbor Freight opens up their electronics division the DIY crowd will be all over it!

OK, now for that Horror Freight story.  +3

We work for rich people, most people aren't rich. I don't care when DIYers do this.

It's when the rich douche with an s550 and a 3 million dollar house tries to do it that pisses me off.

At $775 you are still much more than the sub $300 price tag of Harmony Ultimate. Remote/base station/IR blasters. iPad app is free.

And when the blu-ray player model changes...how much to update the harmony system vs the pro-control system?

Again i am not arguing about which is better. I know that the harmony isn't better. I'm arguing that some guy with a $75-100k household income (there are a lot more of them than there are of homes making north of $150k), mortgage and new baby etc isn't going to have the $775 for a professionally programmed remote. Or the $75-300 return trip reprogramming money for when the models change in a couple of years. But...he might be able to squirrel away $279 (what amazon sells the harmony for) for the Harmony Ultimate.

I don't think a Harmony Ultimate for a DIY type is evidence of the race to the bottom. I think its more like when a young guy buys an entry level mustang because he cant afford a Ferrari. I think the Harmony Ultimate remote/system is a good choice for DIY types or lower income households...unlike a monoprice HDMI switch (for example).
