We have a lot of contractors who use 1/8" hardboard. Not sure of the actual name/type but it's a smooth mdf front with a soften back side. For finishing/painting, they will put plastic/tape below the seams and then tape the seams on the room facing side. That way nothing can get to the floor beneath it.

For your purpose, you could rip it in half to 2' x 8'. That way it's easier to manage vs. 4' x 8' sheets. You could simply overlap pieces all the way to the rack location. In a finishing application, they would fit it like a jigsaw puzzle. They are very reusable and hold up well to traffic.

They also work as a dance floor for tap dancing. #DanceDad

Also, have you ever thought about moving straps. If your rack is 400lbs. you could two guys use straps to carry. It would take no time to prep and you could navigate all thresholds, stairs, etc.

Just realized this thread is 5 years old...

And, sure enough, it was resurrected and hung up for us to comment on by someone who is
(a) a TOTALLY NEW member, who doesn't realize we really don't want to comment on antique threads, and
(b) a new member who is not here to give advice or help with our issues unless they can sell something to us.

As for them bringing up an old thread, we have only ourselves to blame. Right under the subject of the thread, in the thread index, it's written that this thread is from 2014.
A good answer is easier with a clear question giving the make and model of everything.

If someone had asked you about this topic this week, is your memory so good that you would have been able to answer in great detail?

No.
Or maybe, yeah, now that you mention it. [ Here I removed the twelve line description of what we did. I wrote that several hours ago and just realized you really don't want to know what details I remember. ]

My comments actually were aimed at getting members here to just calm down about old threads, especially since every old thread is labeled with its start date in the thread index and WE are the ones responding after a tyro tries to sell us something. So I was saying...

Relax. It's a new member here and they haven't seen years of us being upset, for some reason, each time people comment on an old thread; and
Relax. Making your first post here a sales pitch is not the best way to become welcome, but that's what sales people do.
