8 - 9 year old Laptop (XP) finally ran out of Hard drive space and was replaced this past weekend with new laptop running Windows 8. Lately the laptop is mostly used to program remotes & set up networks. My personal surfing is mostly on my Ipad or office desk top.
Still have a few customers with Pronto TSU7000/7500 in service. Last week my best customer orders a whole bunch of work which includes replacing the old Sharp kitchen TV with a new Samsung. The old Sharp was being controlled by one of these Prontos and thus needs to be reprogramed for new TV. Old laptop told me FU and would not let me finish programming. I loaded Pronto software into new laptop (from Remote Central a couple of times. IE uninstall then reinstall) but can not get it to run. I was optimistic that it would run with the correct Compatibility mode selection in Windows 8 [I've tried XP ServPak2, 3 & 95 modes but no avail]. Program starts to open by showing small window in middle of screen which goes away and leaves program unopened. I have tried to open over a dozen times with a couple of these giving me a pop up message saying file is corrupt.
I know a few people with Windows 7 have tried Virtual machine programs running XP. Some have kept an old laptop around just for this old equipment. I was really hoping that Windows 8 Compatibilty Mode would be the answer.
Any ideas? Anyone out there able to get this software to run on 8 in the correct Compatibilty mode?

Also note: new Computer is Running a 30 trail of Norton Antivirus and I cant seem to figure out how to disable it. Not sure if Antivirus or firewall has something to do with this issue.

There should be no problem getting PPENG working enough to edit in Windows 7/8 (at least it's working just fine on my 64-bit W7 system), but anything involving file transfer requires an actual Windows XP machine, be it a virtual machine (like the free one that came with Windows 7 Pro) or an old true XP system.

Simple compatibility mode isn't going to be good enough because there are custom USB drivers involved.

Be sure you're installing with administrative privileges, and that you reboot after. Also, I just checked and I don't have any compatibility settings selected for PENG or PPENG.

Thanks Daniel. I will probably redo the old computer to do Prontos and some other occasional tasks. If I have any luck getting Win8 to run program, I will let every one know.

On the other hand; any one need some help with DirecTV issues, let me know. I will do my best to assist.

On Windows 7 I am running XP on a virtual machine under VMWare, so you get the old XP drivers. I assume the same approach under Windows 8 will work also. That way you don't need an old XP machine.
Look in the NG forums for several posts on how to do this.

I am running Windows 8.1 with XP under VM. PPENG using on XP so no problem. I copy the file from Windows 8.1 and paste it on XP directly.
