As for the kids who feel life should be handed to them, do you blame them?
Look at how we have brought them up.
Go to school - no one gets left behind, no one fails anymore. Sure it might still be hard to get an A+, but a B requires little effort if you are even a little bit smart.

Play video games, die (Loose) and just pop up with a new life ready for action.
Want to level up without much effort, there are web sites devoted to telling you how to do that for just about every game out there. Why go to all that trouble of earning your way up the ranks.

Play sports - everyone gets a trophy at the end of the season, even the biggest looser. By the time your 15 you too can have a trophy case at home filled with meaningless dust collectors, just for showing up to play. Ahh the memories...

Watch TV, Shows are either about 20 - 30 somethings that lead wonderful lives with no sign of how they earn an income, or they are about 20 -30 somethings that go out and behave like retards (am I allowed to say retards?) with no sign of how they can afford to do the stupid things they do. Or we have shows about people willing to look stupid just for the chance of easy money.

Then of course there is the internet and all the moronic videos that get passed around showing even more stupid people doing stupid things.

If you pump enough stupidity into someone's brain, where do you think they are going to end up?

In places like India and China, there probably is not much of a middle class. So working hard in school, if your lucky enough to be able to go, is not an option, it's a must.
Here kids know working hard can get you to the top, but you can also take easy street and still end up in the middle. And for so many of them, that's OK.

Points all well taken. I went through a few trials and tribulations, financially when raising my son. He did the video gaming, and was / is exposed to the internet and all, however he (through seeing what I had to go through), got a pretty good read on the realities of scratching and clawing for a living & that he appreciated what I was able to do for him (which included private school) as the public schools here, for the most part are a mess---little or no control of the kids and overly large classes where the teachers cannot devote their attention to the kids, like they should be able to.

Overall, though I can see how the whole entitlement thing is systemic in our society today. My wife and I used to sponsor foriegn exchange students, and they were totally focused on academics.

My older brother and I have been having this very discussion this week...kids, and their weak work ethic. By kids, I mean college age ~ early/mid 30s.

Not sure where my generation went wrong (or even if we did go wrong) but certainly some/many 20/30 somethings are afflicted with this weak work ethic.

My son, still in college, is in the middle on this. While his work ethic is not as strong as mine, he will put forth effort when he is convinced there is a decent chance of a ROI. I'd like to think I've been a good work ethic role model, and I'm betting he would corroborate that. His criticism of me might be that I may not have always worked "smart" and been selective of where I put forth my effort.

On the other hand, there might be a reason for the smarter group of this young generation not putting in the same effort that we expect...and here is what i wrote my brother:

I agree to some degree, but many 30 somethings, would tell you no matter how hard they work, they are nothing more than cattle and the company will cut them due to attrition, or being bought out by a conglomerate or merging with some other company. Certainly there is a lot more of that that goes on now, than 40 years ago.

I get the feeling that employee loyalty is hard to come by when the company will not be loyal either. It is a 2 way street. Most young professionals see it as a fact of life that they will not be with a company for more than 5 years... and probably that affects their work ethic and motivation. Certainly there are exceptions but I do believe this to be the new corporate norm, and this trend (merging companies, buyouts, culling of employees, shifting existing jobs overseas) doesn't appear to be abating. If you are a young professional working for a medium or large (or even a small company) corporation, you feel that your job will eventually be culled, no matter how hard you work for that company.

The days of an employee working hard with the ability to rise up the ranks, giving 30+ years to the company and retire with a pension with that company... are long gone. So that may be part of the work ethic issue. I'm not saying its the only explanation though. I don't see Justin's ability to work hard anywhere equal to mine, but I can be one hard working tenacious son a of a bitch and few can keep up with me. So maybe I'm not much of a comparison, but I do try to be an example to my son. I'm unsure if I end up being a work ethic role model for my son. It could be that he would describe it as a stupid and Type A workaholic trait to be avoided too.

Keeping this all in context...I will be 57 this fall, my brother is 61. He is a professor (Microbiology/immunology at Univ of Missou)...he has 2 sons 27 & 33, long graduated from college. You all know what I do for a living...both my son and daughter will graduate from college this year.

We are both politically similar (moderate), so any bias is not extreme.

Government shows up at your house pointing 200 guns in your face demanding you pay a bill, your ok with that?

Many many more that owe a whole lot more than he supposedly does. Look at what Buffett got away with.

I have not spent days and weeks researching this much at all, don't claim to be an expert on the subject, but this sure stinks of big brother to great magnitude.

You ok with us renting land to other countries?

You ok with the fact we sold our nations largest food producer overseas?

Even worse your ok that most of our bourbon is now owned overseas?

You OK with a president that says he is going to carry out his agenda with or without support from the other side?

You OK with speaking Russian, home searches, curfews and food lines?

You OK with people from other countries offering obscene amounts of money for homes, business and land and we greedy bastards just roll over and sell?

Right or wrong I am glad someone stood up to the government and won a battle, but that war isn't over.

If the left and right do not figure something out and meet in the middle your grandchildren are in trouble.

We cannot be a nation of houses with no industry, no thinkers, no doers.

We are being turned into a nation of followers.

Our education compared to most other producing countries is dismal.

We can no longer sit and be quiet and not say anything for fear of offending someone.

The rest of the world and our own government is putting it to us "Like A Boss"

This is why the government is trying to disarm civilians! So we can't fight back!

TBS = They Both Suck = cynical populist sentiment that muddies the waters via some bland equivalence between the GOP and Democrat party.

Seems to be a common sentiment among the Tea Party and libertarian minded folk. Not a common sentiment on the left.

Why is that?

Probably because the GOP is not conservative enough for the Tea Party and hardcore libertarians. And it seems somehow objective to espouse an equal judgement against the two most popular parties because 'hey look at me I don't like either of them.'

I don't find it a compelling statement because it covers over how bad the GOP really is.

In our weekly meeting at work, they were talking about how great the company was doing and how they expected it to continue. These were the same guys who preached how we should all vote republican because Obama and the Dems will ruin us. So me being a smart ass....I just had to say in the meeting sarcastically: thanks Obama!I still have my job so I suppose it went over well :)

This is the same old BS

The libtards ranting about the GOP

The conservatives ranting about libtards!

Either get some fresh perspective or let it lie.

Neither side is going to give up our beliefs.

Move on.....

Oh by the way Stan, quit blaming Texas for everything. We quit taking your guvment tit and we have a surplus of cash down here. Our taxes are lower, cost of living cheaper, and quality of life is just fine.

And by the way, we have been making it way harder to kill babies and use them to fuel hospitals......

Take that!

Sure, we'd be in about 3 more wars, and the thought of Palin as VP, I mean really?

And when exactly did I blame Texas for anything?
