Hello all,

Marantz SR5008: When you turn on the "Video Select" feature, does it remain on so that every time you power up the receiver the selected video source plays through the selected non-video source? Or do you have to turn it on and select a video source every time you power up?

The manual doesn't specify.

Thanks, Craig

I know "sounds like" might not help, but that sounds like the menu operation usually called input assignment. I'd expect it to be permanent until you push the buttons again to change it.
A good answer is easier with a clear question giving the make and model of everything.

Thanks for the reply Ernie.

"Input Assign" is where you assign the connections on the back to the input you are using, however, I still think you are correct in that it would be a set and forget kind of feature.

I stole "Video Select" right from the manual and it allows you to view video from another source while listening to an audio only source. For example maybe you want to see a Hockey Game on the TV but be hearing audio from an iPod.

I would think it would be set until you change it.

Be very careful, as this burned me in an installation. You can only see analog sources on some of the receivers...NOT HDMI!!!

I have never used this feature, but my interpretation of the manual tells me that it is used to display a video source when one of the built in sources (like Tuner/Network/iPod/USB/M-Xport) is selected. CD apparently is available also, but only when an HDMI is not assigned. Not sure if they mean assigned to CD or something else.

But the real question is, what are you trying to do? If you are trying to play something like Sonos with CBL/SAT/AppleTV/BD etc, there is a better way to do it.

I'm installing a Casatunes CT8. One of the outputs will be connected to the CD input on the Marantz SR5008 which will run a living surround sound system and allow it to be used as one of the zones in Casatunes. Casatunes has two analogue inputs. My plan was to use the cable box in the living room system (connected to the SR5008 via HDMI) and feed it's analogue outputs into Casatunes. Casatunes uses IP control to turn on the receiver and select the input, in this case the CD input. I would like for the customer to be able to turn on the TV and change the cable box channel. This is the reason I would like video from the cable box to be shared with the CD input using Video Select.

Basically exactly what you said, iimig.

Radiorhea, I havn't promised this would work to the customer. I'm pre-planning before I open my mouth. Thanks for the heads up on poss not working with HDMI.

Thanks for your help.

Craig

PS for what it's worth I don't even know if I need this. All of the customer's favorite channels will be on a favourites page on the remote for the living room including a page dedicated to the digital music stations. If he wants to change a Chanel he can grab the remote and choose one without the tv being on. I'm just exploring my options.

I have confirmed the Video Select feature does work with HDMI sources.

I understand Yamaha is bringing this feature back, at least with the Aventage refresh coming in May.

Now that I know how Video Select works, I'm not convinced that it is better, but it is different anyway.

Let's say you wanted a source like CasaTunes to play with the CBL/SAT source. You would plug CasaTunes into the CBL/SAT analog, then instead of playing HDMI audio from the CBL/SAT source, you can use the code "Input Mode Analog" to select audio from only the analog source. When you want to go back to normal you would use the code "Input Mode HDMI" or "Input Mode Auto" which would restore the normal audio from the CBL/SAT source.

I forget the models at the moment... We set up a Marantz AVR with the video select several months ago and it has worked as expected. On the same project the same feature was promised with the Pre/Pro, which does not have this feature.
Plan B, take Zone 2 HDMI out into another input on the display. For watch/listen call audio from the main zone, and your video from Zone 2. This also has worked as expected for several months.
When good enough is not good enough.

iimig, that's a smart way to do it for sure. Those commands are available in the IR library?

roddymcg, nice workaround.

Thanks guys, Craig

Just to confirm my original question, did the Video Select stay selected when powered off and on or did it need to be reselected each time?

On the AVR it has stayed on the same input for several months now. I set this up around Thanksgiving for time reference. I believe the unit locked up recently and had to be hard powered. I was not there to test/check, and have not heard that it is an issue.
