This reminds me of the day someone told me that when logging into Windows, sometimes there's no password -- you just hit enter. Except I never figured it out, but this kid did it all himself!
A good answer is easier with a clear question giving the make and model of everything.

Kristoffer will receive four games, $50 and a year-long subscription to Xbox Live from Microsoft. He also knows what he now wants to be when he grows up: a gamer. His dad is leaning toward something in computer security.

The kid found a flaw in the security of Microsoft's biggest attempt to control your home entertainment, and thats all they gave him? They could have easily given him a life time xbox live account, and it not cost them anything

No worries, I think the NSA probably have a few other failsafe backdoors in place.

You cannot count on corporate memory to last, as personnel changes and the red flags of yesterday are forgotten.

"Hacked?"

WOW. I guess anytime trial and error gets you somewhere, you "hacked a back door."

Also. Awesome parenting. Way to use the xbox as a babysitter and not even notice what your kids are playing.

Once when I was a kid, I was playing with my dad's adding machine, adding long lines of numbers and came up with 9,999,999.99

I thought that was pretty cool!

They did notice! That is why the story even exists. You have no clue whatsoever how much the boy played. Makes no sense to make that statement having no idea whatsoever about the family, the child's upbringing or anything.

How many kids do you have? Because sometimes you will let them play with matches and a gallon of gasoline if it will get you a few minutes of peace
