POE can get pricey so I was wondering if anyone has done those long USB cables with positive outcome? Or negative outcome?

Good ol' trust Monoprice has this guy [Link: monoprice.com]

I mean that is pretty cheap for a USB cable. I wonder if it has enough juice to power an iPad without the extra power supply?

Not sure I would ever do an install like this but maybe I'll try it on my own house first haha.

I use Monoprice 15' extension cables for my bedside charger and have had zero issues & it charges my iPad at a normal speed.not sure on how well the Active cables work though. I mean 82' is a pretty Frickiń long way.

If you only need power, wouldn't this work? At least worth a try at $11.50.

Without using an Active cable you will have signal loss. You may experience the awesome issue of the "Not a Authentic Adapter". I would just get the piece from FSB or iDocx.

a 15 foot extension cable at you bed side is totally different than fishing 15 foot wire in a wall and telling a client it is always going to work.

I have personally not been able to go more than 12 foot extension plus ipod/phone/pad cable length before. I get intermittent charging issues.

Which ipad are you using. That is important to. Early revs have the larger power blocks that require 1 amp and not the dinky ones that come with the iphone. I had to buy a 10" 30 pin to usb wire for my ipad 1 to get it to charge.

My question is why you are trying to hack this together instead of buying the right part. You can get 5 port switch with a single poe port for under $100 with a lifetime guarantee.

I have an iPad mini & iPhone 5.

I've had a 15' extension plus a 10' lightning cable plugged in haha.

I'm just curious if anyone has ever done it? Not saying I would ever do it on an install...just curious.

I have 5 iPads mounted in wall with the iDOCx product, I bring 12 volts to each one and use the iDocx power adapter. Works like a charm. The 12v runs are between 40 and 90 feet using 16Ga speaker wire

Just have them put in outlet with the USB chargers built-in behind the dock?

I just got one of these in the mail the other day and need to test it out this weekend.
