I just booted up a desktop that I use a few times a month, a message popped up that said in the next 6 days that microsoft will stop supporting XP, and that I need to buy new software, and if my PC didn't support new software I sold buy a new PC.

My first response was F#&K Bill Gates, my second was "great, a new Mac in this room!"

Why I can't take a call from a customer and say "I'm sorry, your receiver only supports HDMI 1.1, I don't do service calls for them anymore, you need to buy a model that supports 4K."

Or "Sorry, MX3000 editor sucks, you need to buy an RTI system."

it was announced a couple years ago.

It doesn't mean an XP machine wont work. Its just not supported.

XP will no longer be supported (nor office 2003) with software/security/feature updates going forward after April 8th. This was announced over 2 years ago I believe...I've been hearing about it frequently from all IT people I know for at least the last year.

XP will still work just fine; the issue is it will be more prone to malicious attacks and viruses online.

It's a bigger issue for medical practices as a company running XP will no longer be HIPA compliant. The other big issue is that it is the native operating system for most ATM machines so be careful if you use ATM machines frequently as they could become very vulnerable.

Individual users probably won't be affected much as there's not enough people still using the OS for hackers to want to attack it (probably safer now then Apple's operating system in that regard).

Hope that helps a bit more...or just get into the 21st century and buy a Win7 machine (er I mean 8.2 or .3 when its released)

Well, XP was launched in 2001, so it's more like "I'm sorry component video is being phased out, you need to upgrade to HDMI."
It's going to happen to Windows Vista, 7 and 8 as well, it's not exactly a surpise: [Link: windows.microsoft.com]

I was listening to a tech guy radio show the other day and he said that people who are safe online now will probably continue to be safe online with XP. People who click on ads, open attachments, download cutesy things, visit porn sites, etc, are going to be slapped by their stupidity even with Windows 7 or 8.
A good answer is easier with a clear question giving the make and model of everything.

Hell, S-Video was still common in 2001! I sold tons of Monster MVSV2-2M for $34.95 + tax back in my Ultimate days. Nice commission on those bad boys. I still have a few in my "tub of garbage wire that I keep but will never ever ever use but I keep it anyway". I remember the composite vs. s-video demo. we had in the store. It was amazing the difference. Then we got the s-video vs. component demo. for the DVD players and that was even more amazing! Then HDTV was launched and fried the tuners in all the Mits rear pros. :)

I was using Windows 2000 Pro back then as well. And it was good. But long live XP!

I still have a micro XP MCE 2005 system I built in 2006, and recently got the notice (it's just BARELY capable of playing un-demanding 1080p video with XBMC). Even back then, XP was already 5 years old and Vista was just about to come out - I remember because I was able to request free Vista DVDs, which I never ended up using.

Honestly, 12 years is long enough to cling to an operating system. If we backtrack 12 years prior to October 2001, which would be October 1989, you would've been running DOS 4.01 and, if you were a weirdo, Windows 2.0.

Time for an upgrade my friend!
