Customer called last night at 8:30. Of course its OUR system we put in that's causing problems. Has no pic on one of his Dish joey's. SCreen said "turn off. Unit is 168 degrees. Max I 158".

Of course, I told him to just turn off the Joey like it freaking says! Told him to call Dish and tell them. The rack room is not warm AT ALL. Has at least 8 fans in rack AND a large exhaust system. It was difficult to make him understand its a Dish issue. Of course that was made harder since I was just there yesterday explaining he has TWO fail HDMI boards in his integras (but the good news is the new Integra policy is he will get too BRAND new units shipped pronto). New ones in route.

He called Dish. I got a text this morning telling me not to come as dish said "The Joey needs to be disconnected from electric outlet almost every other day when its not in use.". That is the biggest bunch of BS I have ever heard! Sounds like a design issue and their "fix" is not acceptable.

158 degrees is way to high as a limit anyways.

Glad we do 95% directv over dish! Hate Dish. Junk. IMO

Anyone seen/heard anything like this?

Joeys are little friggin furnaces for what that is worth.

Even sitting by themselves, they kick off an astounding amount of heat for their size. I had 4 sitting double stacked in a rack and they would cook themselves. Wound up going putting spacers between them, then an additional shelf, finally having to rehash the top 1/2 of a rack to have a space between the shelves. They just do not dissipate heat well.
That rack had the Hopper, a couple of AVRs, a security dvr and all kinds of other stuff in it. Had fans, proper provisions for make up air, etc. Nothing else had thermal issues except the Joeys.

The first generation directv genie client boxes ran hot as heck too. Current ones do not.
I am a trained professional..... Do not attempt this stunt at home.

We are starting to do auto reboots of any STBs at least every week. Most customers are just used to rebooting them. That is what they have had to do forever when it does not work. It has become second nature to people these days with their computers, phones, tablets, gaming systems, STBs, etc. Why should they continue to have to deal with it now that they have a new fancy control system? :)

Lowhz, and many others. The point is it shouldn't have to be done.

+1. A very wise HDMI expert once told me all source boxes with HDMI should be power cycled at least once a week, with a 15 off period.

15 minutes? Are you serious? Does this slough off EM garbage or something? Static build up? You need to come up with the HDMI equivalent of the Densen DeMagic CD for audio systems or whatever it is called. Or figure out what color of sharpie we should be coloring our RJ45 ends with for our extenders. :)

No, the point of the solution is BECAUSE it has to be done. Dish isn't going to change and Panamax has a solution to keep your customer's box working and prevent your truck rolls.

Why are people so resistant to an answer when it is presented to them?

Well hell, there are a LOT of things that should not have to be done. Books could be written. Volumes even!

I've not seen a piece of consumer electronics gear, with enough internal capacitance, that when powered off for 15 minutes, that it was any more "powered down" than it was at the end of 30 seconds. If the thought is that it allows heat to dissipate, then I would contend that 15 minutes is not enough if you believe heat to be the issue.

So Brent... do tell. What instance makes you say 15 minutes?
