Yeah, too often, it's right up there with how engineers communicate

Maybe CI companies need a role like this:

I don't know about everyone else, but Netflix and Vudu are a must on a streaming device.

Apple won't add Vudu because it competes with their rental service. Looks like Amazon is in the same boat.....

Also just found that the new Yamaha blu-ray player added Vudu, but dropped Netflix. WHAT??

I think this industry is doing a poor job of communicating to customers.

I've never in my life come across someone outside of this industry who's ever even heard of CEDIA, which probably says a lot in and of itself.

True. I have never in my career been asked by a client if we are CEDIA members.

Dropping Netflix may not have been Yamaha's choice. A couple of years ago Netflix did some research and found that fewer than 3-5% use a BD player for Netflix.
To streamline testing and certification of all the interfaces for different products Netflix decided BD players weren't worth the effort. It will happen with other brands at some time as well.

The new BD players from Yamaha do add playback from dropbox (one acct, I was hoping for more) and have Miracast, so as long as your mobile device is miracast compliant then you can send whatever is on the mobile device to the player...up to 1080P with 5.1 audio.

Fins,
you just seem to be gratuitously slamming now. You've made your point. bcf has made his point and has pulled back to an unbelievably reasonable tone. How 'bout you do the same? Reading your comments on engineers now is like watching a guy masturbate: he might be enjoying it, maybe he even enjoys being watched, but it just doesn't interest me.
A good answer is easier with a clear question giving the make and model of everything.

It was my understanding that Netflix did not extend licensing to new model year BD players built by manufacturers who didn't also build displays. Therefore, Sony/LG/Samsung are ok, Denon, Yamaha, Pioneer etc. won't have Netflix in any new models. This is the reason the Pioneer BDP62FD is still being sold, but it's perpetually backordered because Pioneer didn't expect to not have the license renewed and so they had to go back to manufacturing on that piece to keep Netflix.

Since "we" and by we I mean the salesman and CIs spec the equipment going into a job, I can't see this player being a great option when any type of universal control is going in. If you are selling a simple handheld / IR or touch screen / iOS option to control a zone, you still need the Fire remote.

The voice control button on the remote is a dead giveaway there is no IR sensor, plus I looked at the images Amazon provided, and there seems to be no option for IR at all.

I was all excited to create a graphical virtual remote for this thing until I saw their lack of optional control.

I'm pretty disappointed about this myself. I am holding out hope that the Vudu Yamaha is mentioning will be like the Vudu in Onkyo players, where its like its own app store with Netflix and everything else inside (I know this probably won't be the case, but a guy can dream, right?). I think Onkyo calls it Vudu Apps (not even sure if they still have this)

Truth be told its not like the Yamaha BluRay players were great Netflix players anyways. Roku for the win.

I am thinking that someone should be able to write an IP control driver/module for this thing if they had the gumption. :)

I am not holding my breath. Our Roku 2 XS is on its way to the grave. I am eyeing Apple TV so I can use it to extend the Mac Mini display. But I am thinking its replacement is coming soon too. So I will wait. Or I may buy this Fire box in the meantime. My 2 year old can operate the Roku remote just fine. This one looks similar.

I have an MX900 and a Pro Control Pro 24.r but neither are programmed. If I cannot find the remotes, and I am feeling lazy, I use my phone (it has an IR emitter for the TV). I normally walk over to the TV and manually turn it on/off though. :P

A little more to it than that for the BDP-62 but I really can't talk about it. You are correct that the 62 is grandfathered in.
I was at Pioneer when Netflix made the decision. We knew Netflix would be going away eventually though the Elite by Sharp display plan woulda', shoulda', coulda' ' allowed us to continue with it for a while.

Nobody at Pioneer would confirm or deny to us that Elite was staying or going away. We just made the unilateral decision to give up when we could get no ETAs or lead times.
