first off this post has nothing to do with a/v or buisness in general, more general life. Think of this as more a philosophy class or introspective review of ones self... because the reality is. i am not what i thought i was and most likely you are not either.

feel free to share your thoughts and your own story. this is my story...

So today i am having a personal phone call with an A/V industry buddy(he will stay nameless but a few of you will only need 1 guess to figure it out). Now our friendship started when we were competitors in chicago, and 10 years later and 1300 miles later we are still buds. You could say we have been through hell and back with each other, so its a tight friendship. and he knows me better than i know myself(50000ft view)

as some of you may or may not know i am involved in a start-up manufacturing business in the robotics(sorta kinda) world. details are unimportant and i am not ready to share detais yet. but needless to say building the executive team is one of my many resposibilities.

now my buddy will be moving south to tampa to be my sales director in a few short weeks. this became official a couple days ago. yesterday my buddy got introduced via conference call to ownership, BofD, and myself.

typicall 2 hour blah blah blah fest... everything is good and great.

Today during my personal call(talking about conspiracy crap) he says out of the blue... "i understand" i said what?, he said " i understand" i'm torn because there is zero context so i say WTF are you talking about...

he says, i get it now, you build the dreams for people who dream, but cannot make a dream come true.

now this has me pissed off, because i always thought i was the guy with the dream and the uncanny ability to make the dream come to fruition... after about 10 minutes of delicate explaining by my buddy he leads me to the place i never knew...

I am the builder of dreams, not the dreamer. while my buddy is absolutely right, now that i have thought about this for a couple hours, i still dont know how to feel or how i should feel...

it goes deeper than building businesses and into my personal life... i build dreams.

now i am building my 5th business from the ground up, i am responsible for building the dream of someone else...
Ed will be known as the Tiger Woods of the integration business, followed closely with the renaming of his company to "Hotties A/V". The tag line will be "We like big racks and tight holes"...

I am a dreamer. I had to surround myself with believers and those that can execute my dreams.

Did you take "but cannot make a dream come true." to mean that YOU can't make a dream come true? I didn't read it that way, but I could see how it could be taken to mean that, based on how it may have been stated.

Isn't starting this company to produce a specific type of product and service YOUR dream? If so, I don't see a problem- you already built four businesses and I have to think that their success made you somewhat happy, if not a bit crazy due to the BS that can come with certain industries. You got out and now, you're building another one. What is YOUR dream, for yourself? THAT'S what needs defining and if it's different form what you're doing, changes are needed.

Many people couldn't make their ideas come true if they had a cannon to their head, so they hire someone else. Ir, give up. That's where we come in- we make it happen. Our flexibility, curiosity, knowledge and often, the ability to think outside of the box, make it possible for us to come up with solutions that cause others to act like a dog that's watching TV- they hear someone talking, but they have no freaking idea what's being said.

I know what you mean ceied.

I do build my dreams, but for others enjoyment. I build dreams of my own in my off time(Woodworking, hunting places, guns, automating stuff. I made a really cool chicken watering device out of a five gallon bucket and some parts from a toilet flushing kit). But like many, I have some bigger dreams that I just can not afford. Things that I know would make money, but I have not found the right investor. I can and do build others dreams, but I usually get paid well for it and that allows me to build my dreams.
