I'm with you on this one Larry. I'm betting the
much of the subs range will go right through the
solid drywall. Yet I never knew to make sure
I got double nit cloth for grill making. That's
a great tip.

Thanks. I ran into that in 1980 when Marantz actually had a REAL pro, Richar May, designing speakers and I was his assistant.

Larry, you said "this material;" were you referring to double knit or something else?
A good answer is easier with a clear question giving the make and model of everything.

What kind of sub is it? What I have done a few times as a temporary measure and sometimes permanent is install the grill that comes attached to the sub itself to the sheetrock. It works pretyy well with Velodynes, Sonance and any other sub that has a front mounted detachable grill.

The only problem for most people is the grills are black.

Just my 2 cents

For grille cloth, use double-knit material that
you can get at any sewing supplies store. Double-knit
stretches both ways, so it is very easy to get
rid of wrinkles, and you can see through most
double-knit (a requirement for a grille cloth;
if you can't see through it, don't depend on sound
going through it).

...because the original post was titled:

"I need a grill for the drywall in from a sub located in the closet"

...and I figured that no grill cloth will affect bass, and that Ernie just missed the "sub" reference.

Why don't you just do it like I saw it done once?

An alarm installer called me to help finish up an install he couldn't handle. Fortunately I didn't have to patch up the wains-coating he had cut thru for the 8" in wall rear speakers that just happened to have a gas pipe right in the middle of his hole.

He did show me his subwoofer (MTX brand, really hot stuff, right?) that was underneath the floor, just sitting in the dirt. No actually he did have a piece of cardboard from the box separating the sub from the dirt.

Why cut holes?
