I am interested in powerful, quiet drapery automation controllable by x10. Any recommendations for manufacturer, company, model etc. would be very much appreciated.

Why would you ever want to use X-10? Hasn't anyone ever heard of Radio Ra? Line-carrier control systems are too unstable. Go with RA

Although I must admit up front I've had ZERO (0) experience with X-10, I have to agree with Quadrant Tech Guy. From the first moment I heard of X-10 years ago in Popular Science (or some such publication) I thought there was something inherently wrong with sending control signals over AC wiring. That's not to say it doesn't work, but it's just weird.

On the other hand if S.E.Samuels is working on a pre-existing "legacy" X-10 install then he's going to have to live by those rules. (Or sell up.)

By whatever means, I hope your client gets their auto-drapes.

I agree totally that X-10 is weird. It has been around for years with some minor problems, now solved, and Radio Ra is a good solution....

AND X-10 requires you to mess with the power line phases at the power box, where you may or may not have adequate space to insert the bridge that transfers signals from one phase to the other....

AND X-10 is addressable in most urban locations from next door or maybe anyone two or three houses away via their power lines....

AND X-10 is (well, it was four years ago) really screwy to integrate into a system with IR control,

how about IR?

Check out Makita, of all people! They have auto-drape systems that work with instructions that are perfect. The first one I installed was in a trip to the other end of the country where I was putting in the first one I had ever seen. The tech guy at Makita was great at being sure I knew what to order, and it went in and operated flawlessly.
A good answer is easier with a clear question giving the make and model of everything.

We've been dealing with Draper when it comes to projection types screens. In the past year, we have been involved in their drapes and have had great luck. Also I've heard of a company that makes windows that can remotely change to 100% dark. I guess it works off of lcd, but have never seen on. Just a thought.

Not sure what company makes it, but it's called excitable glass and does work on same principle as an lcd display.
