So what do you mean by "pretty primitive". It really needs to just be a 3.0 system and able to switch a few HDMI sources. Remember I'm coming from a mini amp (super primitive).

I don't get why you will be spending more time on labor? If you want to add a AVF then why put the Mini in a back box? Mount the mini down low with everything else. Using a E200 + remote will be above budget. If it's only cable box then IR learning on Mini would be perfect.

It's kind of a weird situation, no equipment below TV. The TV is above a gas fireplace (non wood burning) with a conduit back to a closet (15m HDMI). It'd have to be put in a recessed box behind TV. I don't really want to install the plastic Snap back box above the fireplace, not sure if it'd pass code with being plastic and having holes in it. It does have plenty of clearance from the firebox, etc. though.
I'm leaning towards the primitive Marantz NR1403.
