So, does anyone ever find the time to work on their personal systems?

The UPS truck has arrived a few times in the last week with some new toys and I am proud to say my personal home automation system is finally up to date and working exactly as it should.

I seemed to Frankenstein my programming / wiring every time something new was added or figure out a way to make everything switch properly with complicated macros that no self respecting programmer would ever attempt.

I decided the best method was to start from scratch with a fresh UI and programming instead of piling more pages into my projects.

My question is, does anyone else find the time to work on their own systems and get them 100%? By the way, my wife informed me DirecTV is coming out tomorrow to put in a new receiver and a couple Genies.... thanks for the heads up, babe.

Guess I will have to make a couple small changes and create some custom icons...

No.
A good answer is easier with a clear question giving the make and model of everything.

I wish. I order a bunch of random things. I hire my guys to do my own house because they actually get things done.

Reminds me I need to get new DTV boxes.

Is it April Fool's Day already?

If my customers saw my personal system....I'd starve to death. :)

Nope. We are renting a house so the only thing i have installed is half a surround system in the family room. URC MX-980. The surrounds are still in bubble wrap waiting for me to buy or build stands. The gear sits on a Sanus shelf in the basement with no wire management. There is a piece of aluminum foil wrapped around the base station antenna and the Apple TV's emitter is held on by electrical tape!

Up in the family room the power cord is draped down the wall to the outlet. The subwoofer RCA cable is routed through an existing low voltage ring that had the telephone jack. Wall plate sits on the floor under it waiting to be reinstalled once i finally order that quickport RCA jack. We moved here in August. I started this "install" the first week.

The garage is a total mess. Luckily it's a 3 car garage or one of us would be dusting snow off our car. Boxes and tools and little project stations are allover the place out there "i will get this cleaned up" i keep telling myself.

We signed a 2 year lease. I think we will be moving before i finish the "Move in to do" list.

I am about to be forced into updating my system with my GF moving in soon.

Gotta take out my hodge-podge testing/gaming setup and turn it into an actual, centralized system. Plus removing all my component video wiring for HDMI. That and relocating my "theater" from my living room to the basement. Fun times.

Love these posts.... I was exactly the same. When I worked in car audio, my system was always half assed. That is why I figured if I tore it all apart, I would have no choice but to put it back together properly before I could watch anything.

The funny part was a graphics guy using a four year old UI with graphics that didn't quite match and a vertically letterboxed iPhone 4 interface on an iPhone 5.

I bet a few of you out there have emitters with electrical tape over them... I know I did.

why have a nice system if you cant operate it, program the remote the right way the FIRST time!

I moved about a year ago, so I took time to run wires before we moved in. I still need to do a lot mainly programming. Oh, and run cable, phone and Ethernet on the second floor. I have about 40" of blown in insulation....doesn't sound fun.

I don't have time. If I had time to tinker at home, that would be a bit of a problem. Ergo, for the hour of TV that gets watched every once in a while, a Harmony Smart Control and the 5 minutes of "programming" it took to get it up and running are sufficient.

That's "you're" and "there" but you were waiting for me to say that. I thought he was making an oblique reference to Thier-Smell Parameters.
