I need to convert the optical output on an ATV to analog. I decided to try the Binary converter after several recommendations. But I see the Binary one can only convert 2 channel or PCM to analog. In the audio settings, if I turn off Dolby Digital, does that affect teh audio on the HDMI too? Or will the HDMI still have surround?

Gefen TV.  300+ unit in the field, most are AppleTV companion.  Non has failed on me.

There is is an exception, one unit did not have the Coaxial/optical switch. A**D took it back for exchange.

I wouldn't do it, God forbid a software update turns DD back on and you get no sound. The Gefen does work well.

I don't think he's asking if the DAC will work....I believe he's asking if he turns of the DD, will it also effect the audio coming from the HDMI.

I would assume that it would.  But that's an assumption.  The ATV has ON/OFF/AUTO for the Dolby Digital and  16 bit and AUTO for Audio Output.

For what it's worth....I did this exact thing yesterday using a Binary DAC connected to an AppleTV, going into an analog source on the Bose Lifestyle 18.

I used it for Airplay, iTUNES, iTUNES radio, and I previewed the Lone Ranger and Elysium.

Everything worked.

Were the movies  in DD?  Don't know, my job was to get it to make sound.

I left the Audio Output and DD on AUTO.

Thanks. I need it for zone two for kitchen and deck speakers, so it will only be for music. No one is going to start a movie and want to go listen to it on the deck. If someone starts a movie in the main zone, no one is going to be concerned about that audio in zone 2. So, sounds like I should be OK then.

Normally I use the gefen piece when converting for a distributed A/V system. But I was trying to keep the cost down this time. Its just an AVR upgrade

I would just throw in an Airport Express for zone 2 and be done with it. :)

That would be a better solution. But the client's two sons disagree. And they know more than me because they work in finance.
