I'm looking for a DVD/VCR combo that is custom installer friendly. I would like discrete power and discrete switching from dvd to vcr, and vise versa. I usually use MX800's with my systems and have trouble working around the combo players. I would rather just sell separate dvd and vcr's but that is not always possible. I have not yet been impressed with any of the combo players. What players are you guys using?

John, Since I share your exact opinion on separate players, I did find through trial and error that Panasonic makes a unit you describe. I think it is a PV-4662( I don't have time to look in my RTI file right now since I'm out the door) and it was a progressive player with discrete on/offs and dvd/vcr mode. I use it a lot as a basic cable tuner/dvd player where space is an issue. The power discretes are in the Sonance K2 or RTI master library under Panasonic Vcr "hidden commands". I can't remember if you can paste hex to the MX-800 though, or if the discretes are in the files area.
E-mail me if you can't find them.

A client foisted a Philips DVP620VR on me. It was quite a pain until I figured it out. I am controlling it with a Marantz RC5200.

It has a button for DVD and another button for VCR. It has a power toggle, but that can be overcome.
Here's the key -- You always turn the unit on when you turn the system on, even if you do not need it. You do this with a DVD Play command. When you shut down the system, you send the DVD function command, then Power to turn it off, so that the DVD/VCR will be in the DVD mode next time you turn it on. Also, if you have used it as a VCR meanwhile, you are resetting it to DVD mode so that you can use Play to turn it on.

This approach might work with other units, too.

The only real pain was figuring out which buttons did what for which device. It took more than an hour above what it would have taken me to program a separate DVD and VCR (this was complicated by their new Samsung TV, with a separate input problem that I solved via discrete codes).
A good answer is easier with a clear question giving the make and model of everything.

We found that the Toshiba SD-34 was rather more well behaved than most
