I asked about this a year or two ago but never got anywhere with it. It's been a while so i am asking again.

Exercise machines are all touchscreen devices with Coaxial input for old school cable TV. Ridiculous interface. No discrete codes etc etc. I don't even want to entertain the idea of making the touchscreen display function as a TV at this point.

What i would like to do is installed "clip on" monitors or use stands to hold the displays in place. I need smallish TV's with HDMI inputs and discrete commands. Anyone else climb this mountain before me?

"Clip on" TV's will probably look the best but require a lot of rigging to get it functioning the way i want it to.

Small TV with stand in front. As long as i can find small controllable monitors this is probably the best case scenario.

Model suggestion for a small monitor that can be controlled in the 10"-15"?

Something with a headphone jack? Right now the plan is to make all machines display the same thing so that we can utilize the in-ceiling speakers whenever possible. If the client asks us to make each display a separate zone we would need headphone jacks.

Never hear of those Mac. If you do headphones, mount a sacrificial cable to the TV and fixed the jack end to the machine somehow.
I may be schizophrenic, but at least I have each other.

Naxa was mentioned recently, here.

Not much info, in that thread. Maybe you could PM.

If you order a Naxa to test, let us(me) know how it goes.

Hoping the display has a headphone jack (audio from the HDMI connection). Whether we get discrete or not we can learn the volume up/down commands. If not we can always find a spot in the console to pilot a hole and make our own jack using one of these guys.

Thats where i got the link from. If i had enough 0's in the bank i would seriously consider developing clean/thin/simple displays in sizes between 5"-17" with HDMI ports and discrete IR and IP control. Front panel buttons would be a module that can be swiveled to the back for installations where you don't want end users to be able to touch them.

Accessory page at the website would include...

Rack mount
Under-cabinet mount
In-wall or surface mount
Floor standing
Pole mounting

With security and exterior options for each. Finish would be matte black plastic. Squared flat design so that stick on bezel skins can be used to match decor.

And for a few dollars more they can be touchscreens :).

I just did some Life Fitness equipment that had an HDMI input on the TV. We had to take apart the panels on the machines and route the HDMI cables carefully through the machines. We hid the DM room boxes under the machines. There are no discrete inputs. Couldn't control it CEC either. The only thing I could do was get the remote for the TV's and get into the installer setup and change the input to always power on to the Hi-def input. That's what they call it in there menu. We set the timeouts for inactivity to four hours. Each TV has to manually get powered on from the side of the TV. They still send video to the displays from a touch panel along with the rest of the TV's that aren't on the machines.

Is this for a commercial gym, or a person's home?

If for a gym, i suggest trying to use the integrated screen for TV viewing. The integrated touchscreen and hardbutton controls work pretty well, on some newer machines (I have experience with Precor brand, at the local YMCA).

I've also used many machines that had an external monitor, with a mounted keypad. Some of the machines might be too tall for that.

Cybex may offer an external monitor mount, too.

This is for a home with older machines that only have coaxial inputs. I can get video into them but no control. The client has to drill into the menu to get the TV display visible and still use a handheld remote to control the source. Too much trouble for the client.

Even with a new machine we end up without a complete solution so it's not worth the expense. The goal is to make each machine an individual video zone. Client selects "Cable TV" at machine 2 and the display turns on and they have control of the cable box volume etc. "Room Off" turns everything off. The new machine still requires manual selection of the video "app" on the machine.

Normally we put typical displays on the wall in work out rooms. This workout room is a small building outside of the main house "gym". It has class all the way around and vaulted ceilings. There isn't any place to fix mount the TV's and no place to have them pop/drop out of. We were going to connect each machine to basic cable but the cable company requires a cable box. So if we have to have a box and remote anyway we might as well give them access to every source in the house.

There is a new product out that would have worked well. TV's could have rested in the corners when off and brought exactly where we needed them when on. http://www.trak-kit.com/

That product has been out a couple years, featured in CEPro and Residential Systems.

Pole mount will work fine. Might want to go up to a 20-24" display, and just position it a foot away from the machine. Keep it simple, known product.

That Naxa doesn't look stellar, but may be worth an order, to check it out.

Share your right angle 3-pin connector that you use, for power.

That's awesome, the more options for difficult jobs like that the better!

Trak kit has been around for more than a decade but I only became aware if it recently.
